The US and EU had now agreed to the terms, afte longer period of waiting.

Fresh movement emerged overnight in the long-running trade negotiations between Brussels and Washington after EU lawmakers backed steps tied to a major agreement with the United States.

According to Ekstra Bladet via. Reuters, Conservative EPP, the largest political bloc in the European Parliament, announced late Tuesday that negotiators had reached a provisional understanding connected to the implementation of the transatlantic deal. Reuters and AFP both described the arrangement as preliminary.

EU prepares tariff changes

Central parts of the agreement focus on reducing European tariffs on American imports — a demand pushed heavily by the White House during negotiations last year.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU is now close to delivering on commitments made during talks with Donald Trump in Scotland in 2025.

“It means we will soon deliver on our side of the joint EU-US statement as promised. I now call on co-legislators to act swiftly and conclude the process,” von der Leyen wrote Wednesday on X.

Political pressure around the agreement intensified earlier this month after Trump warned Brussels against delaying implementation.

White House threatened higher duties

Trump publicly stated that the EU had until 4 July to complete its side of the arrangement negotiated during meetings at Turnberry last summer.

Additional tariffs on European goods would follow if the bloc failed to comply, according to the president.

“I have patiently waited for the EU to fulfill its part of the historic trade deal we agreed to in Turnberry, Scotland, the biggest trade deal ever made!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on 7 May.

“A promise was made that the EU would fulfill their side of the deal and, as agreed, reduce their tariffs to zero!”

Terms agreed in July 2025 left most EU exports facing a 15 percent US tariff. European officials had originally attempted to secure a full zero-tariff system between both economies, though negotiations ultimately landed elsewhere.

Energy purchases part of wider package

Trade concessions were accompanied by broader economic commitments from the European side.

Brussels also agreed to large-scale purchases of American energy and military equipment under the framework negotiated with Washington.

Current plans commit EU countries to buying US energy worth 750 billion dollars over three years.
