Trump putting pressure on Cuba: US sends aircraft carrier strike group to Caribbean

The date of the deployment is no coincidence.

The war in Iran is inching closer to its third-month anniversary, but now eyes are turning toward US military movements on the other side of the Atlantic.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon confirmed that a major aircraft carrier strike group has officially entered the Caribbean, multiple news outlets reported.

According to the US Southern Command, the fleet includes the massive USS Nimitz, a destroyer, and a full combat air wing.

The US Southern Command stated on X that the fleet represents “the epitome of readiness and presence, unmatched reach and lethality, and strategic advantage.”

They added that the USS Nimitz “has proven its combat prowess across the globe, ensuring stability and defending democracy from the Taiwan Strait to the Arabian Gulf.”

Digging up the past

The timing of the naval arrival is no accident. On the exact same day, the Trump administration took a dramatic legal step by filing criminal charges against former Cuban leader Raul Castro.

Prosecutors are targeting the 94-year-old over a tragedy that happened thirty years ago. The charges stem from the 1996 shootdown of two civilian planes operated by an exile group called Brothers to the Rescue. That incident resulted in four deaths, including three American citizens.

Washington is explicitly linking these legal actions to its broader foreign policy goals. President Donald Trump has repeatedly issued warnings that Cuba is “next” on his list following recent American military operations against Iran. He also claimed that the communist island would fall “soon.”

Warnings of blood

Leaders in Havana are refusing to back down in the face of American pressure. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has delivered a fierce response to the growing threats coming from Washington.

He made it clear that his country will fight back if American troops attempt an invasion. Earlier this week, the Cuban leader insisted his nation has the “absolute and legitimate right” to defend itself against any military assault.

The stakes could not be higher for both sides. He warned that any direct American attack would quickly trigger “a bloodbath with incalculable consequences.”

Echoes from Iran

Leading up to the launch of Operation Epic Fury (the name of the US-Israeli operation in Iran), the US sent multiple aircraft carriers to the region.

The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group arrived in late January 2026, and the USS Gerald R. Ford was ordered to sail from its deployment in the Caribbean to the Middle East a few weeks later.
