Handling sensitive government files requires strict protocols and massive security clearances.

When federal workers decide to bypass those rigid safety measures, they usually employ sophisticated digital tricks.

However, one recent federal indictment outlines a surprisingly sweet approach to digital smuggling.

A digital recipe

Former federal prosecutor Carmen Mercedes Lineberger currently faces serious criminal charges in Florida. According to The Daily Beast, the 62 year old woman worked as a managing assistant for the Department of Justice.

She recently pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of theft of government property. The formal indictment also includes charges for concealing and altering official public records.

Prosecutors claim she stole highly sensitive documents regarding President Donald Trump in December 2025. She reportedly emailed the files directly to her personal account using fake names.

The Daily Beast reports that she renamed a massive confidential document as a bundt cake recipe to avoid digital detection. She allegedly disguised another internal memorandum as a chocolate cake recipe.

The hidden files

The stolen documents reportedly belong to Special Counsel Jack Smith. His legal team originally prepared the massive file to detail their criminal investigation into classified documents stored at Mar-a-Lago.

That specific federal case never actually reached a jury trial. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon officially dismissed the entire matter back in July 2024.

Judge Cannon permanently blocked the public release of the investigative report in February 2026. She argued that releasing the unproven details would create a “manifest injustice” for the unconvicted defendants.

Facing the consequences

Federal authorities quickly tracked down the suspicious culinary emails. FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the bizarre security breach in a recent public statement.

“Carmen Lineberger allegedly emailed the confidential material to her own personal email, disguising it as dessert recipes to conceal it from record searches,” he explained.

He also offered a sharp critique of the original classified documents probe. “This FBI will not hesitate to bring to account those who violated the trust of the American public in an investigation that should’ve never been brought to begin with,” he added.

If a jury convicts her on all the current charges, the former prosecutor could spend up to 25 years in federal prison.
