Education has always been about preparing the next generation for the future.
But sometimes, what happens inside the classroom is less about career skills and more about shaping how young people think. A new nationwide rule is about to change what every single student must learn before they can graduate, United24Media reports.
A mandatory shift
Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education is making a major change for everyone in university. No matter their major, every single student must now take four required subjects.
The new curriculum includes history, philosophy, the Russian language, and a course called “Foundations of Russian Statehood”. According to The Moscow Times on June 2, the rule applies to all educational levels and academic programs.
This sweeping move reminds many observers of the old days. During the Soviet era, universities forced students into a strict ideological framework through classes on the Soviet state and Marxist-Leninist governance. That old system also focused heavily on criticizing Western political models.
Civilization and patriotism
While the Soviet program took decades to expand to technical departments, this modern version is a universal rule from day one. The Moscow Times reported that officials want to build patriotism and civic responsibility.
The ultimate goal is to make young people feel like they belong to a distinct “Russian civilization.” Loyalty matters. The lessons even connect an individual’s personal success directly with the political stability of the government.
The coursework splits into five specific blocks. Students will study national values, the current political setup, and future development challenges. They will also look closely at the identity of the state.
Boots and books
This classroom shift is part of a much bigger push across the entire school system. The government has already transformed younger classrooms to focus on national defense.
Officials previously ordered schools to teach drone piloting and assembly to younger children. Classrooms were also filled with military gear, including mock Kalashnikov rifles and training grenades.
That training came through a course that replaced traditional life safety classes back in September 2024. Now, the state is extending its reach from high school pre-conscription drills straight into university lecture halls.
