Trump’s Lawyers Get Orders from US Judge, To Explain $10 Billion Missed Deadline

A Miami federal judge had ordered the lawyers to explain the President’s decision.

Courtroom attention has shifted from the substance of Donald Trump’s high-profile lawsuit against the BBC to the conduct of his own legal team.

According to Reuters, a federal judge in Miami has ordered Trump’s attorneys to explain why they failed to meet a key filing deadline in the president’s $10 billion defamation case against the British broadcaster.

The missed deadline has now raised the possibility of sanctions from the court.

Judge Demands Answers

U.S. District Judge Roy Altman issued an order on Monday after Trump’s lawyers failed to submit a response by Friday to the BBC’s request that the lawsuit be dismissed.

Altman instructed the legal team to explain why they should not face consequences for what he described as an “apparent disregard of court deadlines.”

No immediate public response was issued by Trump’s attorneys following the judge’s order.

Dispute Centers on Edited Speech

Lawsuit stems from a BBC report that included an edited clip of a speech delivered by Trump following the 2020 presidential election.

Trump alleges the broadcaster combined separate portions of his remarks in a way that falsely suggested he encouraged supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol after his election defeat.

BBC has previously acknowledged that the editing created a misleading impression. The broadcaster apologized for the segment and accepted that viewers could have interpreted the clip as a direct call for violence.

Despite that acknowledgment, the legal battle has continued, with Trump seeking $10 billion in damages.

BBC Seeks Dismissal

Court filings submitted by the BBC argue that the case should be thrown out before reaching trial.

According to the broadcaster, Trump has failed to demonstrate that the network knowingly published false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth — a key requirement in U.S. defamation law involving public figures.

BBC attorneys made that argument in a filing submitted earlier this year, asking the court to dismiss the lawsuit entirely.

Legal Fight Moves Forward

Latest court order does not address the merits of Trump’s claims against the broadcaster. Instead, it focuses solely on the failure of his legal team to comply with procedural deadlines.

Case now faces two immediate questions: whether Trump’s attorneys will face penalties for missing the filing deadline, and whether the BBC’s effort to have the lawsuit dismissed will ultimately succeed.

Proceedings remain ongoing in federal court in Florida.
