They might speculate the leader will go back on vacation.

For a world leader caught in a massive conflict, an isolated countryside retreat suddenly demands the heavy fortifications of a front-line military base. But steel and concrete can only do so much to calm a highly nervous mind.

New roadside shields

Vladimir Putin owns a highly guarded official residence deep in the Valdai region of Russia. Located more than 600 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border, the sprawling estate normally serves as a quiet presidential getaway.

But according to the independent Russian news outlet Agentstvo cited by La.lv, the main road leading toward the property now features some unusual new structures.

Heavy anti-drone nets recently appeared above several large truck parking lots. These protective canopies sit right along the M-10 federal highway, just nine kilometers away from the sprawling presidential compound.

Agentstvo noted that these specific defensive screens are entirely new additions to the area. An analysis of local mapping data confirmed that none of these protective structures existed at those specific locations back in 2025.

Blocking the sky

Armies frequently use basic metal and rope nets to shield vulnerable supply routes from overhead attacks.

The suspended webs work perfectly. They easily stop small, lightweight flying devices from dropping explosives directly onto their targets.

However, military experts point out a major flaw in this roadside defense strategy. A thin canopy offers zero real protection against a direct strike from the massive, long-range drones that Ukrainian forces frequently launch across the border.

The Valdai estate itself is already considered one of the most heavily fortified properties in the entire country. To keep the skies clear, the Kremlin surrounds the compound with advanced air defense systems and dozens of sophisticated anti-aircraft missile batteries.

An empty house

Despite the massive rings of steel and weaponry, the Russian president seemingly prefers to stay away.

He hardly goes there anymore. Over the past few months, local media reported a sharp drop in his visits to the lavish countryside retreat.

Back in May, sources close to the Kremlin revealed that the Federal Security Service had drastically tightened his personal protection protocols. Following those sweeping security upgrades, the Russian leader reportedly stopped visiting the Valdai property altogether.

So the new roadside nets serve a strange purpose. They simply protect a massive fortress that the president no longer wants to use.
