Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that a series of letters he sent to international partners and political figures over the past month were designed to achieve specific objectives. Among them was a message addressed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which Zelenskyy said delivered the outcome he had been seeking.

Speaking alongside the leaders of the Nordic and Baltic countries during a press conference in Tallinn, Zelenskyy said each letter had a different purpose. While he declined to provide details, he suggested that several of his efforts had produced tangible results.

According to Zelenskyy, correspondence was sent to institutions and leaders including the European Union, the United States, the White House, Congress and Putin. He said the goals varied depending on the recipient and the issue being addressed.

“I had different goals. For example, regarding the United States, I really wanted to do everything possible to shift at least some of its focus from the Middle East to Ukraine,” Reuters reported, citing Ukrainska Pravda.

Seeking support

The Ukrainian leader indicated that one of his priorities was securing additional air defence capabilities for Ukraine as it continues to face Russian missile attacks.

“I can’t share with you all the details but I believe my nation needs a lot of antiballistic missiles. And I’ve got the result and I will not share with you details of this result, but I did it.”

Zelenskyy did not elaborate on what concrete outcome had been achieved through his contacts with Washington, nor did he disclose any further information about military assistance discussions.

He also referred to a letter sent to Putin, suggesting it had fulfilled its purpose despite receiving a public rejection from the Kremlin.

Unclear outcome

“I had a goal, sending a letter to Putin … and I think I’ve got the result what I needed.”

The Ukrainian president did not explain what specific result he was referencing in relation to the Russian leader.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, the comments come after Zelenskyy published an open letter on 4 June proposing a direct meeting with Putin to discuss ending the war. He also called for the participation of Europe and the United States in any negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

A day later, Putin said he had read the letter but “saw no point in holding a meeting”. Zelenskyy subsequently explained that the public message was intended to provoke a response from the Kremlin, noting that Ukraine has limited channels through which it can communicate directly with Russia.

Earlier appeal

The latest remarks follow another letter sent by Zelenskyy at the end of May to US President Donald Trump. In that message, he warned of growing shortages in Ukraine’s air defence network, particularly systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

While Zelenskyy now says both his outreach to Washington and Moscow produced desired outcomes, he has so far chosen not to reveal exactly what those results were.
