A proposed data center near Nashville Zoo has sparked fierce opposition, with more than 360,000 people raising concerns about its potential impact on animals and nearby communities.

A planned data center near the Nashville Zoo has sparked massive opposition in Tennessee. Resistance to the construction plans has grown significantly, and a large petition has now gathered more than 360,000 supporters.

Critics fear that the facility could affect both the zoo’s animals and the surrounding residential areas. Opposition includes local residents as well as country music star Brad Paisley via his Instragram.

Developer DC BLOX rejects these concerns and maintains that the company can operate the facility without negative consequences for the surrounding area, according to People.

Concerns for the Animals

One of the most prominent voices in the debate is Nashville Zoo CEO Rick Schwartz. According to local media, he believes the location is problematic because of the facility’s proximity to the zoo.

According to Schwartz, both noise and artificial lighting could create challenges for some of the zoo’s most vulnerable animals. Among them are clouded leopards, a species that the zoo has successfully bred for many years.

“There must be a better place for it than next to the largest attraction focused on animals and children,” Schwartz said, according to People.

Local Residents Unite

One of the organizers behind the protests is local resident Drew Small, who has been actively involved in the issue since the plans were announced. Small created the website NoNewDataCenters.com and has helped organize the protests.

He believes the public still lacks answers to key questions about the project’s environmental and infrastructure-related impacts. He therefore encourages residents to participate in the public review process.

At the same time, two members of the Nashville Metro Council have proposed a temporary halt to new data center projects while the city’s regulations and zoning laws are reviewed, People reports.

Company Defends the Project

DC BLOX emphasizes that it already operates data centers elsewhere in the southeastern United States. The company says it has begun discussions with both the local community and the Nashville Zoo.

According to the company, the project will comply with all applicable environmental requirements. It also highlights technical measures designed to reduce the facility’s impact on the surrounding area during operation.

The plans will now be reviewed by the planning commission. The outcome could have implications for both the project itself and future data center developments in Nashville, according to People.
