The line between loyal fandom and political exile can blur in an instant. When high-profile athletes clash with powerful leaders, a standard fan celebration can quickly turn into a high-security standoff.
A recent sports gathering near Washington proved just how messy these public feuds can get, The Daily Beast reports.
Escorted away
A major sports spectacle quickly descended into chaos outside the gates of power. The Daily Beast reported that UFC star Sean Strickland was forcefully removed from a fan viewing party near the White House on Sunday evening.
Secret Service agents and local law enforcement surrounded the 35-year-old middleweight champion. The crowd booed loudly as law enforcement officers dragged the champion away from his screaming fans.
The drama unfolded on the Ellipse, where thousands of fans had gathered to watch a special fight card. Strickland had previously claimed he was barred from the main event on the South Lawn because of his recent political views.
Locked inside
The fighter immediately turned to social media to document his arrest. Strickland filmed a video from the back of a secure law enforcement vehicle and shared it on his Instagram Story.
He seemed confused about his legal status. “I’m pretty sure I didn’t break a law, like I’m pretty sure. But we might be going to jail, but I’m pretty sure we didn’t break no laws,” Strickland said.
He told fans he “may have been charged with disorderly conduct.” Strickland also hopped onto X to praise an attendee who helped him gatecrash the secure area.
“To the fan that snuck me in.. Youre a f—ing legend and a true America,” he wrote. He then added, “You did what the UFC wouldnt.”
Banned from humanity
Strickland was once a supporter of Donald Trump but recently turned on him over foreign policy decisions. He claimed the UFC told him he “wasn’t cleared by the White House” after a big title win in May.
However, UFC chief Dana White completely denied any official ban took place. White told reporters that the fighter simply did not make the guest list for the private birthday celebration.
The promotion boss even mocked the controversial athlete during a press conference. “Sean Strickland is banned from humanity. We don’t want him near any human beings anywhere,” White said.
