For generations, global travel meant packing heavy bags and preparing for exhausting multi-day journeys with endless layovers.

Flying across the planet used to feel like an epic, exhausting trek that required days of recovery time. Soon, a major aviation breakthrough will shrink the globe like never imagined before, reports DR News.

Shrinking the globe

An Australian airline is preparing to pull off a record-breaking aviation feat. According to a report by DR News, Qantas will officially launch the first direct non-stop flights between London and Sydney in October 2027.

Passengers will buckle up for a massive journey lasting anywhere from 19 to 22 hours. The Australian media outlet ABC reported that this ultra-long route will span a staggering 16,995 kilometers.

That distance easily beats the current record holder. The news agency dpa noted that Singapore Airlines presently operates the longest commercial flight between New York City and Singapore, covering 15,349 kilometers.

A historic mission

Turning this ambitious dream into a reality requires massive technological updates. To conquer the immense distance, Qantas ordered custom-built Airbus aircraft fitted with an extra 20,000-liter fuel tank.

The planes can carry 238 passengers and stay airborne for up to 22 hours. The carrier first announced the venture, named Project Sunrise, back in 2017 under a previous chief executive.

However, global disruptions hit the timeline hard. Supply chain snags and the pandemic pushed the initial launch back by five full years, meaning the first delivery is way behind schedule.

Despite the long setbacks, corporate leaders remain incredibly proud of the upcoming milestone. Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson celebrated the announcement in an official statement.

Paying a premium

According to ABC, Hudson explained the motivation behind the grueling route. She stated, “Qantas was founded on the belief that Australia’s distance from the rest of the world should never stand in the way”

The chief executive expects the ultra-long route to redefine global aviation history. “The pioneering spirit shown by generations of our employees has paved the way ever since, and today we take the most significant step in this mission in our 105-year history” she added.

Travelers wanting to skip the layovers will need to save up. Industry analysts expect the airline to charge a high premium for the convenience of a single, continuous flight.

Fortunately, the airline already runs a direct route from London to Perth on the western coast. For the new eastern route, tickets go on sale in February 2027.
