The demonstration placed a veteran performer in an enclosed setting where assistance could not arrive immediately. A medical researcher watched as the carefully arranged conditions became increasingly uncertain.
Harry Houdini was sealed inside a submerged iron coffin in New York on August 5, 1926, when the container abruptly surged toward the surface.
The Hungarian American illusionist feared the movement could damage the metal shell and cause it to leak. Even in an emergency, his assistants would require several minutes to remove the circular plates securing the coffin.
Houdini documented the experience in a letter to physician W.J. McConnell, according to Historienet. McConnell was examining methods intended to help miners trapped by underground collapses. Houdini offered his experience with confinement, lung capacity and strenuous performances as potentially useful evidence.
The test stood apart from the escapes on which he had built his reputation. In those acts, Houdini generally worked his way out of restraints, locked containers or submerged apparatus. His career included escapes from jail cells, a water-filled milk can and the Water Torture Cell.
Inside the coffin, however, he had no lock to defeat. His task was simply to remain enclosed for as long as he believed he could continue.
Breathing became more difficult
According to Houdini’s letter, he had conducted two private rehearsals before the submerged attempt. One took place above water, while the other used a specially constructed airtight coffin. Neither created the same level of discomfort.
The final trial raised concerns before the coffin was completely secured. Houdini reported that the interior already felt warm, leading him to question the condition of the air.
He eventually spent 91 minutes inside. In his account, he said his breathing became heavy after about 50 minutes. As the test continued, he began seeing yellow lights and deliberately kept his eyes open because he feared falling asleep.
His assistants occasionally shook the coffin to circulate the trapped air. During one attempt, the container rose sharply, making Houdini fear that the shell could be damaged and begin leaking.
After 91 minutes, he felt the surrounding pressure ease. Houdini wrote that the first rush of outside air made him feel as though he had lifted from the coffin floor.
Unlike a stage escape, the outcome depended heavily on the container, the remaining air and the time required for others to open it. His account captured the strain of waiting inside a sealed space while judging how much longer he could continue.
The New York experiment took place less than three months before Houdini died on October 31, 1926, from peritonitis after his appendix ruptured. It stands as one of the last major endurance tests in a career defined by increasingly hazardous performances.
