Lithuanian border guards recently uncovered tunnel dug beneath a border fence from Belarus, marking the country’s twelfth subterranean smuggling route detected in 2026.
Border security is not just about walls, fences, and security checks.
It is also about finding new ways to spot and combat illegal immigration from neighbouring countries.
The border patrol in Lithuania has identified a dozen of these instances in 2026 alone.
Underground smuggling routes
Polish border authorities supplied specialized detection tools that helped officers pinpoint the secret passage. The unfinished tunnel dropped 1.5 meters down and stretched four meters long. The tunnel originated in Belarus.
Officials confirmed that migrants were unable to use the incomplete route to enter Lithuanian territory. Border agents filled in the secret tunnel shortly after completing standard legal checks.
A growing pattern
This discovery marks a trend. According to the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania, border officials have detected twelve subterranean crossing attempts since the beginning of 2026.
The local border unit uncovered three separate tunnels in recent weeks alone. This shows a growing number of migrants trying to enter Lithuania via various tunnels.
Crossing the border without official permission carries serious legal consequences in the Baltic nation. Anyone caught making illegal entries faces heavy fines, immediate arrest, and up to two years behind bars.
A growing number of migrants from Belarus is a cause for concern
“A new trend has been observed this year, with migrants making greater use of tunnels to enter the territory of the Republic of Lithuania,” says the Lithuanian commander of the State Border Guard Service and calls it a migration crisis.
The commander also claims that Belarusian government officials are actively helping migrants dig these tunnels into Lithuania and Poland.
In the last five years, over 25,000 migrants have been denied entry into Lithuania.
