When a powerful leader approaches the end of their term, whispers about what happens next often turn into genuine alarm. Now, a former insider is issuing a stark warning about the turbulent days ahead.
The inner circle
Miles Taylor served in Donald Trump’s first administration. Now, as a fierce critic, he has shared a grim outlook on the president’s final years in office.
Writing a column in The i, Taylor explained that private conversations with his former Capitol Hill colleagues paint a deeply unsettling picture. The Mirror US also highlighted his startling claims.
“Privately, my former colleagues on Capitol Hill acknowledge that they’re no match for this President,” he wrote. Opposition within the Republican Party is fading fast.
Without any real pushback, the president now sits surrounded entirely by loyalists. This massive shift could easily remove every remaining political guardrail after the upcoming midterm elections.
Testing the limits
Taylor warned that a cornered politician is incredibly dangerous. “When Trump feels cornered, his impulse is to lash out. In the two-and-a-half years I served under him in his first administration, I saw it again and again,” he explained.
The former official expects the president to bypass Congress entirely. He also believes the administration will openly defy the Supreme Court if legal rulings block their path.
Another major fear involves extreme emergency powers. Taylor suggested the White House might trigger the Insurrection Act or suspend habeas corpus to handle supposed domestic security issues.
“There are many recipes for constitutional crisis; the President may cook up all of them,” Taylor warned.
Looking ahead
Critics dismissed similar warnings from Taylor ahead of the 2024 election. The Trump camp heavily criticized his previous forecasts.
“Trump and his allies called the warnings ‘preposterous’, ‘phoney’ and ‘fake news’,” he wrote. Yet, Taylor pointed out that almost all of those past predictions actually happened, including military deployments and massive civil service purges.
He even questioned whether the leader plans to step down. “I put ‘finale’ in quotes because I firmly believe Trump himself isn’t sure if he’ll leave office at the end of the next two years,” he wrote.
Taylor stressed his ultimate goal is to prepare the public. “So when I warn about Trump’s ‘finale,’ I’m not doing it to fearmonger. I’m doing it because it’s coming.”
