A sudden shock
John Gannon is a seventy-five-year-old conservative who proudly supported Donald Trump. The lifelong Republican never imagined he would find himself caught in the middle of a massive federal crackdown.
His perspective completely changed during a recent trip to the airport. Gannon and his fiancée, Yasmin Suarez Reyes, were preparing to fly to Las Vegas.
Then, everything took a drastic turn.
According to HuffPost, federal agents suddenly surrounded the Venezuelan immigrant and took her into custody.
Questioning the methods
Gannon shared his devastating story during a Thursday interview on CBS Mornings.
“After leaving the United Room, eight officers, ICE agents, swarmed Yasmin and detained her, didn’t tell us why, and rustled her off into a car,” Gannon told the network.
He noted that the agents failed to identify themselves or explain their actions. Officials later claimed she had overstayed her visa, but Gannon insisted his partner followed the rules.
“She filed an asylum visa and all their filings were timely,” he stated.
Feeling betrayed

“I feel totally betrayed,” Gannon said during the broadcast. “I mean, you never think or I never thought a guy like me would ever be involved in anything like this.”
When CBS reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez asked about Trump’s very public campaign promises regarding mass deportations, Gannon argued the focus was supposed to be completely different.
“Not law-abiding people,” Gannon replied. “Let’s go after the criminals. They’re not going after the hard guys. That’s too difficult. It’s easier to pick them up at the airport. You know, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel.”
A broader crackdown
Suarez Reyes remains in detention and faces possible deportation.
“No, sir. That’s not what I voted for,” Gannon concluded, adding that he misses her tremendously.
The incident highlights a wider national trend. ABC News reported that federal immigration arrests hit a record high in July, with authorities detaining over fifty-one thousand people.
Quietly, the administration continues to expand these sweeping operations. This push comes despite recent public outcry over high-profile violence involving federal agents in Minnesota.
