Vice President JD Vance recently opened up about welcoming his fourth child, a son named Alec born on July 19. In a Fox News interview, Vance revealed how Trump reacted to the news.
Vance explained how the president offered him a brief break from his official duties. “A couple of months. Yeah, so the president called me, actually, literally the first full day that Alec was alive,” Vance said. “So this is the day that he was born.”
The vice president recalled reminding the commander in chief about their upcoming schedule. “And he says, you should take some time off. And I said, ‘Well, Mr. President, I’ve got a meeting with you tomorrow.’ And he said, yeah, take some time off, like today. That’s all you got,” Vance added.
The arrival of baby Alec makes Vance the first sitting vice president in 150 years to have a child while serving in office. The couple announced the news online, confirming that Usha and the baby were doing well at Walter Reed Medical Center.
Taking a plunge
Second Lady Usha Vance also spoke with Fox News about the decision to expand their family. She admitted that adding a fourth child felt like “a risk to a settled and happy family dynamic.”
Despite those initial worries, she expressed gratitude for taking the step. “I’m really glad that we took this plunge,” she noted. “I’m really glad that we decided to move into the unknown and do something that felt like a little bit of a risk to a settled and happy family dynamic, because it’s only become happier.”
She added that the transition has gone smoothly so far. “It’s been really lovely so far,” she shared, explaining that older siblings Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel now compete to hold the infant.
Both parents make an effort to spend individual time with each child daily. Usha reflected, “Now, I’m sure there are going to be hiccups here and there, but for right now, they seem to be really thriving.”
