A public plea
Anatoly Sashchuk serves as the fire support platoon commander for the 121st Independent Territorial Defense Brigade. He recently posted a dramatic video pleading directly with Ukraine’s top military leadership for an urgent evacuation.
According to TSN.ua cited by onet, the officer stated his men have been trapped on the front line since April without a break. Their original deployment was meant to last only four weeks.
The commander explained that the soldiers they replaced had spent eight grueling months in those same positions. Now, his own unit is facing severe deprivation.
Drinking to survive
Military leaders initially promised the unit reliable supply drops using heavy drones. Unfortunately for the men on the ground, the reality proved far different.
Sashchuk reported that his men spent up to twelve days with absolutely no food or fresh water. He noted that the desperate soldiers were forced to drink their own urine just to stay alive.
Communication networks also suffered a total collapse. After an attack destroyed their Starlink terminal, the platoon spent two weeks relying entirely on basic handheld radios.
Vital medical supplies rarely reached the trenches. The severe lack of hydration and basic medicine left several troops drifting in and out of consciousness.
Command pushes back
Faced with starving troops, Sashchuk announced he pulled his men back from their posts without waiting for official permission. The brigade command quickly issued a formal response to the viral video.
Military officials pushed back and insisted that aerial deliveries were running on schedule. They stated the unit received nearly thirty packages weighing nine kilograms each over the previous month.
The 121st Brigade acknowledged the harsh battlefield conditions but argued the recording does not reflect the full picture of the situation. They strongly urged the public to reserve judgment.
Echoes of the past
Senior officers promised they are currently working on a safe rotation plan for the exhausted troops. Even so, this public outcry closely mirrors a similar military scandal from the spring.
A major supply crisis previously hit the 14th Motorized Rifle Brigade, leaving frontline soldiers abandoned for months. That incident ultimately forced the General Staff to fire multiple high-ranking commanders.
