Now, a massive dispute over secretive shipping networks has triggered a furious public warning.
Warnings of piracy
Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a severe threat to European nations on Wednesday. During a visit to military exercises held by the Russian Pacific Fleet, he promised fierce retaliation if foreign governments continue to grab Russian merchant vessels.
According to reports from the Kyiv Independent and Digi24, the dispute centers on the seizure of controversial cargo ships. Putin described these Western actions as “nothing more than piracy,” and he made his anger clear.
“We note that the authorities of some countries, in violation of international maritime law, are trying to restrict the movement of ships belonging to our economic operators,” Putin stated.
He claimed that these foreign governments plan to steal Russian goods for profit. “And recently, they even came up with the idea of confiscating our ships and selling the goods they stole from us,” he added.
Hunting the ghost fleet
The Russian leader warned that Moscow “will have to respond in kind” if these seizures do not stop.
This clash stems from a growing Western campaign against a shadowy maritime network. Experts call it a ghost fleet. It consists of old oil tankers that Moscow uses to bypass economic sanctions and move goods secretly.
Many of these aging ships fly the flags of entirely different countries to hide their true origins. But Western authorities are catching on. In recent months, naval forces from the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Sweden have intercepted several of these mysterious vessels.
One major case involves a ship called the Caffa. Swedish courts recently approved a plan to hand this vessel over to Ukraine because it carried grain taken from occupied Ukrainian territories.
High stakes at sea
The United States is also getting directly involved in the maritime crackdown. Back on January 7, American officials seized a Russian oil tanker right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
That bold move happened even after Moscow reportedly deployed a submarine to guard the ship.
Environmental groups and Western governments point out that the ghost fleet creates massive risks beyond just geopolitics. These outdated tankers often lack proper maintenance.
Experts warn that they could easily cause catastrophic oil spills and devastate marine life.
