This has made it hard for the country to assert its dominance elsewhere.
Now Putin is putting pressure on his generals to maintain power in other regions.
Eyes on the East
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently boarded the Varyag GM missile ship to monitor naval exercises in the Far East. The visit highlighted Moscow’s ongoing push to project strength in the Asia-Pacific region.
During the Pacific Fleet drills, Putin gathered key military and intelligence leaders for a strategic discussion. The group reviewed security measures along the nation’s eastern perimeter.
Among those attending were Pacific Fleet commander Viktor Liin and Sergey Makhori, chief of the Federal Security Service’s border directorate for the Sakhalin Region. Acting 68th Army Corps commander Alexey Shvedov also joined the talks.
Focus beyond Ukraine
While heavy fighting continues in Ukraine, the Kremlin remains cautious about its long Pacific coastline. Balancing regional defense with ongoing military operations presents constant pressure for senior military officials.
Addressing his commanders on board the missile cruiser, Putin underlined the necessity for complete coverage across all territories.
He made clear that quiet borders cannot be left unattended. “Obviously, key tasks are being addressed today during the special military operation, but our duty is to ensure the security of the Russian state along all of its borders, in all regions,” he said, according to Russian state news reports.
The statement signals that Moscow wants to project strength across Asia, even while heavily committed to the invasion of Ukraine.
Pressure from Putin
Strategic conditions near Japan and North America have grown increasingly complicated in recent months. Naval activity in northern Asian waters has steadily climbed.
During the meeting, Putin acknowledged the geopolitical reality facing his commanders in the east. He noted that the situation in the Pacific Fleet’s operational area “is not easy.”
“Yesterday, the [fleet] commander shared his assessment of the situation in the region and I absolutely agree with it. Today, I would like to hear your proposals on what is to be done additionally to create conditions for you to attain our objectives the most effectively,” Putin added.
By asking for fresh proposals, the Russian leader indicated a willingness to bolster eastern defense lines. Maintaining operational readiness across vast territories remains a primary goal for top officials.
