Trump brands CNN journalist ‘fake reporter’ before White House makes it deeply personal.

The White House has escalated its criticism of a CNN correspondent after she questioned President Donald Trump about comments made by a Democratic senator.

Kristen Holmes, CNN’s senior White House correspondent, faced attacks from both Trump and an official White House social media account on Monday. The criticism later extended beyond her work as a journalist, with the administration invoking her children in a post condemning her question.

CNN has defended Holmes and described the response as a personal attack that crossed a line.

Holmes had asked Trump to respond to remarks made a day earlier by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia.

Speaking to a crowd on Sunday, Ossoff accused Trump of not wanting to perform the duties of the presidency and referred to the president’s ballroom project, his travel and executive assistant Natalie Harp.

Holmes raised Ossoff’s remarks during an Oval Office event and asked Trump for his response.

Trump dismissed the senator by describing him as a “Pee-wee Herman lookalike” before turning his criticism toward the CNN correspondent.

As Holmes continued attempting to question him, Trump told her: “Quiet, quiet, quiet. You’re very disrespectful.”

After learning that she worked for CNN, the president continued: “Fake news, you’re fake news, you’re a loud boisterous person. You’re fake news. Be quiet. Be quiet. You’re a fake reporter and you report fake news.”

White House brings her children into dispute

Criticism continued outside the Oval Office.

The White House’s rapid-response account shared footage from the exchange and described Holmes as a “disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession.”

Officials accused her of taking a “cheap shot” at a White House staff member and added: “These scumbags are the lowest of the low.”

A subsequent post directed at Holmes went further by referring directly to her family.

“Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question. They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive. It’s quite troubling,” the White House account wrote.

The comments prompted criticism from journalists, including colleagues of Holmes.

CNN defends its correspondent

CNN responded publicly by backing Holmes and describing her as “one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House.”

The network argued that asking Trump about accusations made by a sitting US senator constituted a legitimate question of public interest.

“Public officials are free to challenge reporting they disagree with, but personal attacks on journalists for asking questions are beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press,” CNN said.

One of Holmes’ CNN colleagues also defended her, describing her as an accomplished reporter, person and mother while questioning why asking the president to respond to a senator’s accusation had generated such a forceful reaction.

Previous clashes with female reporters

Monday’s confrontation follows several instances in which Trump has personally criticized female journalists during his second presidency.

Trump previously told a Bloomberg reporter, “Quiet, piggy,” while another CNN journalist has been branded “corrupt” by the president. During an NBC interview earlier this year, Trump called the moderator “crooked or stupid” before leaving the interview.

White House communications director Steven Cheung also targeted Ossoff following the senator’s Sunday speech, using a series of personal insults against the Georgia Democrat.

The latest dispute differs in one notable respect from Trump’s direct confrontations with reporters: official White House channels subsequently amplified the criticism and brought Holmes’ children into the administration’s response.
