The young aide has reportedly gone to extreme lengths to maintain her proximity.
When a marriage plays out on the global stage, every public outing is planned down to the minute.
But sometimes a spouse decides to step back completely. And often, there is a specific reason for the distance.
Keeping her distance
Behind the scenes, Melania Trump has made a habit of staying out of the spotlight. An analysis of her schedule shows she appeared in public just 47 times in 2025 following the presidential inauguration.
That trend continued into 2026, with only 38 public days logged in the first seven months of the year. Now, a prominent author claims to know exactly why she is rarely seen according to Daily Express.
Biographer Michael Wolff says the 56-year-old refuses to be around when Donald Trump’s 35-year-old assistant is in the room. Natalie Harp has become a near-constant companion to the president.
Refusing to show
Wolff outlined the dynamic in his Substack newsletter, Howl. He noted that the aide’s constant presence played a major role in the first lady’s absence during the 2024 campaign.
“Melania, whose appearances with her husband were carefully negotiated and choreographed, would not show up if Harp was around,” Wolff wrote.
Wolff also wrote, “Nobody got between Harp and Trump. And you only got to Trump by going through Harp.” He stated that the assistant superseded the president’s family entirely.
Finding a room
The young aide has reportedly gone to extreme lengths to maintain her proximity. New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan detailed these efforts in their book, Regime Change.
When the campaign moved to a New Jersey golf club in 2023, Harp did not receive official housing. But she found a way to stay close anyway.
The reporters noted that Harp initially set up a makeshift bed in the maids’ quarters. She later moved into the women’s locker room to be even closer to the Republican leader.
Staying in New York
According to the original article, one letter between Harp and the president reportedly read, “You are all that matters to me.” The exact origin of the note remains unclear.
As the bond between the president and his aide deepened, his wife made a major life choice. The first lady reportedly decided against moving back into the White House.
Instead, she has opted to remain in New York. She continues to manage her own schedule, far away from the daily operations of the West Wing.
