In political battles, the rules of engagement often shift depending on who stands in the spotlight.
What gets condemned as a major flaw for one leader can easily be brushed off as a non-issue for another.
Double standards have become standard operating procedure.
Reading the cards
During a recent Oval Office gathering, President Donald Trump held a set of staff note cards in his hands. The meeting was held to honor a young lifeguard and a child saved off the California coast.
Yet observers quickly focused on the detailed paper in the president’s grip.
The situation drew sharp critique from progressive commentator David Pakman on a podcast episode cited by Raw Story. Pakman noted that the cards held “photos of the two guests” alongside “scheduling instructions” for the event.
“There are legitimate reasons to examine Donald Trump’s fitness,” Pakman said. He added that “60 percent of voters don’t think he has the mental sharpness to be president.”
To Pakman, the instruction sheet raised immediate questions about readiness. “It tells Trump what to do and what to say,” Pakman explained. He asked, “Can Donald Trump not even remember who two people are?”
The double standard
The central issue for critics is how differently similar situations were treated in the past. When former President Joe Biden relied on note cards, conservative commentators routinely cited them as evidence of decline.
Pakman recalled how right-wing outlets treated those earlier moments as medical emergencies. “This is exactly the type of thing that Republicans used to say Biden had dementia,” Pakman said.
He recalled how cable hosts would circle photos in red and question Biden’s awareness. Pakman added that “some disgraced TV doctor would diagnose advanced dementia from 3,000 miles away.”
Changing the rules
This contrast in political reactions underscores a recurring theme in modern political debate. Critics argue that partisan commentators swap their standards whenever leadership changes hands.
“If it did prove it about Joe Biden, according to these people, it must also prove it about Donald Trump,” Pakman stressed.
“What this proves is these Republicans don’t believe their own stupid standards,” Pakman said. “Because when Biden held a card, it was a national emergency. And when Trump holds one, he’s a very busy guy.”
