Russia secretly arms Iran with supersonic tech: “Political clearance from the very top”

Russia has secretly been helping Iran develop supersonic cruise missiles.

Top Russian specialists helped Iran build advanced cruise missile tech in a covert multiyear project codenamed C430L, according to a Financial Times investigation, cited by Express.

Leaked flight logs, patents, and messages show the joint project started back in 2023. The collaboration continued through recent regional fighting.

Engineers focused their work on creating an operational ramjet propulsion system.

The engine enables the missile to maintain extreme velocity, traveling at multiples of the speed of sound throughout its flight.

Fabian Hinz, a senior analyst with Conflict Armament Research, highlighted the major deal.

“This is the transfer of a highly strategically sensitive military technology from Russia that the Iranians have wanted to acquire for decades,” Hinz said.

“A programme like this would require political clearance from the very top in Russia.”

Threat at sea

Operating at high speeds and low altitudes, these missiles drastically reduce the reaction window for naval and ground-based defense systems.

These high-speed missiles directly threaten Western warships in narrow waters like the Persian Gulf.

Former CIA military analyst Jim Lamson stressed the strategic danger to naval forces.

“For the Iranians, this would give them a qualitatively new strategic weapon system that could threaten US Navy vessels,” Lamson said.

Despite successful flight tests of the propulsion system, analysts note there is no indication the fully integrated weapon has reached frontline units.

Neither Moscow nor Tehran has publicly commented on the leaked project details, according to the Financial Times.

A Longstanding Iranian Ambition

Iran’s interest in ramjet-powered missiles is not new.

According to the Financial Times, Tehran has spent years pursuing the technology, including demonstrating a domestically developed ramjet engine in 2019 and announcing plans for a supersonic anti-ship missile.

The C430L project therefore appears to represent more than a new weapons programme: it could mark a major step in Iran’s longstanding effort to develop a missile capable of combining extreme speed with low-altitude flight.

Russian assistance could have provided the expertise needed to overcome some of the engineering challenges that had previously limited Tehran’s progress.
