But soon, holding onto that federal money might require a dramatic change in how they choose their student bodies.
A massive financial shift
The United States government announced plans on Thursday to strip federal tax breaks from private educational institutions. According to AFP, the financial threat targets schools and universities that use race as a factor when selecting students.
President Donald Trump has made this specific issue a major political priority since his recent return to the White House. His administration is actively working to dismantle diversity programs across corporate America, state institutions, and college campuses.
Now, the focus is shifting directly toward the finances of the private education sector. The US Treasury Department intends to revoke the special tax-exempt status of private schools “that promote discriminatory practices,” AFP reported.
Federal officials expect the new financial rule to officially roll out during the fiscal year beginning May 31, 2027.
Thousands face the threat
The sweeping policy proposal covers nearly every level of private learning. It stretches from local private elementary schools all the way up to the most elite university campuses in the nation.
The sheer scale of the change is massive. The US Treasury calculates that the new measure could impact “up to 18,000 institutions” across the country.
The department made its strict new boundaries crystal clear in a recent release. “A private school will no longer be able to claim tax exemption if it adopts, maintains or enforces a policy or practice that discriminates based on race, color, national or ethnic origin,” the official statement read, according to AFP.
Targeting elite campuses

Following a lengthy investigation into the Ivy League school’s diversity practices, federal lawyers accused the university of openly discriminating against white and Asian applicants.
Despite the tough new federal stance, schools can still offer a helping hand to certain demographics. They just have to change how they measure need.
The Treasury explicitly noted that institutions can still legally “help disadvantaged students using criteria independent of race, such as family income and geographical origin, etc.”
