What is Zone 2 running?
Zone 2 is a low-intensity heart rate zone, typically falling between 60% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. At this effort level, your breathing is light, controlled, and rhythmic. You should easily pass the “talk test,” meaning you can comfortably hold a full conversation without gasping for breath.
While it might feel unnaturally slow—or even compel you to take occasional walk breaks—it triggers a wave of biological adaptations that high-intensity training simply cannot match.
The science: Why running slower makes you faster
According to sports science research, including landmark studies on cellular metabolism led by Dr. Iñigo San-Millán, low-intensity training directly improves performance at the cellular level.
