The air in a courtroom shifts the moment a jury returns. Months of fierce arguments and graphic evidence suddenly boil down to a few quiet words. For one controversial star, his reality just shattered.
Russell Brand is officially a convicted sex offender. A jury found the comedian guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday. The decision ended a deeply disturbing trial at Southwark Crown Court.
The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for just over nine hours. They cleared Brand of two other historical rape charges, along with one count of attempted indecent assault. But the four guilty verdicts carry severe consequences, according to Sky News.
Mr Justice Bennathan did not mince words. He refused bail and remanded the 51-year-old comedian in custody right away. The judge told the court that a “significant custodial term” is now inevitable when sentencing takes place on Monday.
Quiet in the dock
Brand showed no visible emotion as the foreman read his fate. He stood completely still. The former television presenter just stared straight ahead while being led away by prison guards, writes Sky News.
The reaction from his family was entirely different. His wife, Laura Brand, gripped a friend’s hand and fought back tears as the reality sank in. She rushed out of the building shortly after.
His father, Ron Brand, covered his mouth in absolute shock. The public gallery sat in total silence. After three days of tense deliberations, the grueling wait had finally concluded.
A dark timeline
These four convictions stem from a dark string of incidents that took place between 2004 and 2009. During a shift at Choice FM, Brand sexually assaulted a woman. The jury also convicted him of grabbing another victim’s breasts at a busy Soho party.
The most serious charge involved a woman he originally met at a comedy gig. In 2009, Brand raped her at his Hampstead home. Later that same year, he sexually assaulted another woman who was working on a Channel 4 project.
His legal nightmares are far from over. The Metropolitan Police confirmed they are actively investigating the disgraced comedian over further rape allegations from two additional women.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy told Sky News that Brand is a “danger to women”. Police have already handed files to prosecutors regarding those separate, disturbing claims. A much larger reckoning might just be starting.
