A recent official notification from London has done just that.
Sudden palace letter
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the United Kingdom in August to settle down while their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, start school. But a fresh directive issued by Buckingham Palace on behalf of King Charles has caught the couple off guard.
The guidance was sent on Monday to British government departments and royal officials to clarify the couple’s official position. A spokesperson for the Sussexes told the BBC that the pair was “a little surprised not have been told about this in advance.”
Palace aides sent the letter to the couple’s team at 1:59 p.m. local time, according to PEOPLE. The team sent back questions twenty minutes later. But by 3:11 p.m., officials told them the document had already gone to the media.
Private citizen status
The letter emphasized that the Duke and Duchess remain non-working members of the royal family. Lord Chamberlain, Lord Benyon, issued the statement following multiple requests for clarity after the couple arrived back in Britain.
“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared,” the official letter explained. It noted that the couple stepped down in January 2020 and that “their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
It also confirmed that their HRH titles remain in abeyance and cannot be used. Royal sources told PEOPLE that the memo does not create a new policy, but simply reiterates terms agreed upon six years ago.
Security decision looms
Timing matters, especially as Harry prepares for several public events across the UK, including work linked to the Invictus Games in Birmingham. He has also spent years in a legal battle over official security arrangements.
A committee that determines royal security is expected to meet this week. The palace letter explicitly noted that “Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.”
The couple is currently residing in a private house outside London. Despite the surprise over the palace memo, Harry plans to press ahead with his scheduled charitable appearances.
