Chinese and Russian leaders reaffirmed their diplomatic commitments to North Korea during its founding anniversary. The messages highlight ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships between the nations. These statements coincide with deepening military and economic cooperation in the region.
Celebrating the founding anniversary
North Korea marked the 78th anniversary of its establishment on September 9. According to the Kyiv Independent, the ruling Workers’ Party newspaper published the congratulatory messages on its front page. The state media outlet KCNA initially reported these diplomatic communications.
The Chinese president emphasized his commitment to the bilateral relationship. As noted by the Kyiv Independent, Xi Jinping informed the North Korean leader that Beijing intends to strengthen strategic coordination. The message signaled a continuation of close diplomatic ties between the neighbors.
The Russian president also pledged to maintain close cooperation with Pyongyang. According to the Kyiv Independent, Vladimir Putin cited their “comprehensive strategic partnership” as the foundation for these ties. He claimed that this relationship would support regional security and a multipolar world order.
Expanding military cooperation
Moscow and Pyongyang have rapidly expanded their military cooperation since 2023. As reported by the Kyiv Independent, the two nations formalized their relationship through a strategic partnership treaty in 2024. This official agreement notably includes a mutual defense provision.
This alliance directly impacts the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe. According to the Kyiv Independent, North Korea has supplied the Russian military with artillery ammunition and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian and Western officials confirmed these hardware transfers.
The military support extends beyond equipment shipments. As highlighted by the Kyiv Independent, Pyongyang deployed an estimated 14,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces in the Kursk Oblast. These foreign soldiers actively participate in frontline combat operations.
Assessing troop casualties
The deployment of North Korean personnel has resulted in significant battlefield losses. These casualties occurred during combat operations alongside Russian forces.
