US military plans in Poland take a major step forward as Trump promises news soon.
Washington and Warsaw have spent months discussing how much deeper their military partnership should go. President Donald Trump now says those talks are moving toward a potentially significant new step.
According to Reuters, plans for a US Army base in Poland are making progress, according to Trump, who suggested Thursday that the proposed location could soon be revealed.
Such a move would further strengthen the American military footprint on NATO’s eastern flank, where Poland has repeatedly pushed for a larger and more permanent allied presence amid the continuing security threat posed by Russia. Polish President Karol Nawrocki has publicly advocated a permanent American base and said in July that the political path toward such an arrangement appeared to be open.
Trump teases an announcement
Trump used Truth Social to provide his latest update on the negotiations, while giving considerable credit to his Polish counterpart.
“If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our Great U.S./Polish Alliance,” Trump wrote.
According to Reuters, Trump also credited “the bold leadership” of Nawrocki for the progress.
No location was disclosed, and Trump’s wording stopped short of announcing that a final agreement had been reached.
Nawrocki responded on X by making clear that Warsaw was ready to keep working toward a deal.
“Ready to continue our efforts to strengthen our defense cooperation,” the Polish president wrote.
Nawrocki also promised support from the government in Warsaw as the two countries consider where American soldiers could ultimately be based.
“I can assure you that the Polish government will do its utmost to provide the best possible location for the US Army base,” he added.
Warsaw has wanted this for years
Poland’s enthusiasm for a larger American military footprint is hardly new.
US and Polish officials agreed years ago to expand defense cooperation, with American forces and military capabilities distributed across several locations including Poznań, Powidz and Łask. Around 4,500 US military personnel were serving rotationally in Poland when the two countries outlined an expanded presence in 2019.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in 2022 gave Warsaw an even stronger argument for bolstering NATO’s eastern defenses.
Nawrocki has continued that push during his presidency. His office said after talks with Trump in June that the White House was open to increasing the American presence, while decisions concerning permanent basing would depend on strategic and planning work at the Pentagon.
Pentagon had already opened the door
Signs of movement also emerged from Poland’s Defense Ministry earlier this summer.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said in June that the Pentagon was receptive to Poland’s offer to accommodate a permanent US military presence, although no final decision had been made at that point.
His comments followed discussions with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in Brussels, where American troop deployments across Europe were also under review.
Poland has meanwhile continued to treat close military ties with Washington as a central part of its security policy. Nawrocki has described the United States as one of Poland’s most important allies and has argued that his country should play a leading role in strengthening NATO’s eastern flank.
Thursday’s announcement carried an additional historical weight in Warsaw.
Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the Polish president’s chancellery, called the development “great news for Poland,” according to Reuters.
His reaction came on September 17, exactly 87 years after the Soviet Union invaded Poland from the east in 1939.
No timetable for a final agreement has been announced. Trump’s suggestion that a location could be revealed “very soon,” however, marks the clearest public indication yet that months of discussions between Washington and Warsaw may be approaching a concrete decision.
