Carefully staged political events are designed to project strength and absolute control.
But when a leader picks a bitter fight with the people operating the cameras, a grand spectacle can easily unravel.
Sometimes, a total lack of sound delivers the strongest message.
A silent spectacle
President Donald Trump hosted a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday to unveil a new helipad on the White House South Lawn, according to The Hill. Live footage showed him chatting with construction workers and snipping the ribbon.
However, nobody at home could hear a single word he said. The usual array of heavy television microphones was completely missing from the lawn.
The audio disaster happened because four major networks refused to send their equipment. Fox News, CBS, ABC, and NBC all announced they would not participate in the shared television pool.
They pulled their crews to protest the president’s recent decision to ban CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the property.

Friendly fire
The glaring audio gap did not go unnoticed by his supporters. During live coverage on the conservative network Newsmax, a host quickly pointed out the missing equipment.
The presenter noted that the situation was a prime example of the media ban backfiring on the administration. Even a microphone from NewsNation failed to capture clear audio of the outdoor event.
The timing of the boycott was especially disruptive. CNN was originally scheduled to manage the out-of-town broadcast pool for the president’s upcoming trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Taking legal action
The three banned news organizations are now refusing to accept the new restrictions. On Monday morning, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico announced a joint federal lawsuit to force the government to restore their access credentials.
“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the organizations said in a joint statement.
They added, “Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting.”
Trump brushed off the criticism in a post on his Truth Social platform. The president wrote that his actions were not an assault on the free press, but rather a necessary strike against fake news.
