Music lovers know how quickly a single track can take over the cultural conversation. Every once in a while, a runaway hit captures the collective mood and refuses to let go of the charts. That kind of rare momentum just reshaped music history, knocking a pop legend off her long-held throne.
Country singer Ella Langley has officially claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Her hit song “Choosin’ Texas” has now spent 23 weeks at No. 1, breaking the all-time record.
That achievement puts her ahead of Mariah Carey, whose perennial holiday anthem “All I Want for Christmas Is You” accumulated 22 non-consecutive weeks at the top between 2019 and 2026. Carey could reclaim the lead this coming winter, but Langley holds the crown for now.
The track’s dominance goes well beyond a single list. It has led the Hot Country Songs chart for 41 weeks and spent 18 weeks atop the Digital Song Sales chart.
Unexpected global wave
Langley co-wrote the track during a 2024 writing retreat alongside another country star, Miranda Lambert. Neither artist expected the song to reach such dizzying heights.
“It was not on my bingo card for ‘Choosin’ Texas’ to take over the world,” Miranda Lambert told Billboard. “I’ve never seen anything like it. So when Ella calls and is like, ‘What does this mean?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know. You might need to call Taylor Swift right now [and ask her], because this is, like, that kind of big.'”
The massive response surprised the singer just as much.
“It feels surreal,” Langley told Billboard News. “I think this has been the biggest moment for me, where I’ve seen where fans can change your career. For so long, you’re like, ‘Alright, one song at a time, one record at a time.’ But with this one song, and they’ve done it continuously for me, but really with ‘Choosin’ Texas’, man, have they taken ahold of it. It’s wild.”
While streaming numbers dipped slightly by 9% this past week, heavy playlisting keeps the track firmly in the public ear. For now, Langley stands alone at the top of pop history with the possibility of still expanding the record.
