Russian occupation forces are confiscating drone-delivered Ukrainian food aid and abducting civilians in the blockaded city of Oleshky.
Russian occupation forces are systematically confiscating humanitarian food supplies dropped by Ukrainian drones for stranded residents. According to United24 Media, the chief of the Oleshky Municipal Military Administration confirmed this development during a recent interview. Ukrainian forces previously conducted multiple drone deliveries to support the trapped civilian population living under military occupation.
The most recent humanitarian operation successfully delivered approximately four tons of food to residents scattered across the city. However, Russian forces quickly began seizing the aid while accusing recipients of actively supporting the Ukrainian military. The occupation authorities currently treat the town as sovereign Russian territory subject to their domestic legal frameworks.
Oleshky Municipal Military Administration Chief Tetiana Hasanenko explained the ruthless confiscation tactics employed by the occupying forces. She stated, “If you receive food supplies from the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it means you are collaborating with them”. Russian commanders characterize any civilians receiving non-Russian food as violating Russian law and supporting enemy operations.
Abductions and civilian disappearances
Beyond seizing essential food supplies, Russian forces continue to detain and abduct local residents on a regular basis. Hasanenko described this terrifying practice as an ongoing reality for the remaining population living under military control. She noted that people are frequently taken away while entire families disappear without leaving a single trace.
The occupying authorities reportedly transport these detained civilians to hidden basement facilities for unrecorded interrogations. Relatives and local officials receive no information regarding the whereabouts or the physical condition of these abducted individuals. Hasanenko somberly noted that nobody knows whether these missing residents are still alive after being taken away.
This campaign of intimidation occurs within the context of a severe blockade maintained by the occupying forces. The Russian military systematized its complete blockade of the occupied settlement starting in early 2024. Consequently, stranded civilians face severe daily shortages of food, drinking water, medicine, electricity, and natural gas.
Humanitarian crisis and population decline
The international community has recognized the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding within the isolated occupied territory. The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine released a concerning report regarding the situation in June. The monitoring mission documented that no official food deliveries had successfully reached the city since late May.
Given the strict blockade, Ukrainian drone operations represent one of the only remaining channels for delivering humanitarian aid. These aerial deliveries provide crucial sustenance to the roughly 2,000 residents who currently remain in the city. Before the war began, the local population of the bustling settlement exceeded 24,000 permanent residents.
The deliberate deprivation of resources serves as another method of controlling the remaining civilian population. By blocking official aid and confiscating drone deliveries, Russian forces force residents into complete dependence on the occupation administration. Ukrainian officials continue attempting to support these isolated citizens despite the severe risks and escalating confiscation tactics.
