Desperation often drives military forces to take drastic measures to secure a victory.

When two powerful forces push against each other without moving, the tension has to snap eventually.

Global leaders are watching one major military standoff very closely right now.

Top diplomats are openly sounding the alarm. The fear is that the current gridlock will trigger something much worse.

A dangerous gridlock

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently traveled to Europe to discuss international security issues. He stopped in Lisbon for a major news conference to address the ongoing fighting in Ukraine.

The battlefield reality has barely shifted in recent months. According to a report by TASS, Rubio painted a grim picture of this frozen situation. He explained that a lack of momentum from either side creates a highly unstable and unpredictable environment.

“This is a very dangerous war. It’s an extremely dangerous war because, frankly, right now it seems to be at a stalemate, and stalemates are very dangerous because stalemates only end one of two ways,” he said.

The top American diplomat stressed that waiting for the conflict to simply resolve itself is not a safe strategy for anyone involved.

Two paths forward

World leaders have spent months debating how to permanently end the violence. The diplomatic community generally agrees that moving past the current gridlock will require incredibly difficult choices.

Rubio outlined the first potential option for ending the deadlock. This route requires mutual concessions from both capitals.

“Number one, you have a negotiated settlement, one in which each side has to give up something in order to get peace,” Rubio noted during his address.

This path involves tough diplomacy, long meetings, and painful compromises. The alternative, however, involves a terrifying increase in military aggression.

The risk of expansion

If diplomacy fails, the conflict could easily spill over its current borders. Desperation often drives military forces to take drastic measures to secure a victory. Weapons get bigger, and tactics become more aggressive.

“The other way that stalemates end is through escalation. One side or the other, or both, escalate what they are doing in order to try to break the other side and break the stalemate, and that’s very dangerous,” Rubio warned.

He cautioned that this kind of intensity could “turn what is a war between two countries into a much broader and far more dangerous regional conflict.”

Washington plans to stay heavily involved in the peace process. TASS reported that American officials will keep working to secure a negotiated settlement and finally bring the devastating conflict to a close.
