Russian data centre completely shut down following attack

Russia’s technology infrastructure has suffered another setback after a drone strike forced a major data facility to suspend operations.

The incident adds to a series of attacks on the country’s digital infrastructure as the war in Ukraine increasingly affects essential online services repors Dr news.

Third Facility Hit

Russian technology company Yandex confirmed on Sunday, October 11, that its data centre in Vladimir, east of Moscow, had been damaged and completely shut down.

According to Reuters and Russian state news agency TASS, the attack caused infrastructure failures, although no injuries were reported.

Yandex warned customers about possible service interruptions and advised them to activate backup arrangements while engineers assessed the damage.

The company has not announced when the Vladimir facility will resume normal operations.

Consecutive Drone Strikes

The latest incident follows two earlier attacks on Yandex facilities during the same week.

On October 8, drones struck a data centre in Sasovo, in Russia’s Ryazan region, triggering a fire and forcing operations to stop.

A second attack on October 9 damaged the company’s Kaluga facility, disabling several infrastructure modules.

According to the Financial Times, these facilities support important digital services and computing systems, including technology used in artificial intelligence development.

Ukraine Signals Retaliation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on October 8 that his country was responding to Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s digital infrastructure.

Russia has also attacked Ukrainian telecommunications facilities, contributing to interruptions in connectivity and commercial services.

Yandex, frequently described as Russia’s equivalent of Google, operates search technology, transport applications, online shopping platforms and cloud services.

The extent of the latest damage remains under assessment, with no confirmed restoration timetable.
