Pope Leo XIV has announced an upcoming medical procedure following a recent health examination, raising questions about his scheduled international engagements.

The Vatican has provided initial details about his treatment and expected recovery reports Dr News.

Surgery Scheduled This Week

According to Reuters and DR News, doctors discovered a small, localized nodule in the 71-year-old pontiff’s lung during a medical checkup.

Leo disclosed the finding to worshippers gathered in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, October 11, explaining that it had been detected at an early stage.

Medical specialists recommended removing the growth, and the pope agreed to undergo surgery in the coming days. Its precise nature has not been publicly disclosed.

Recovery Plans Announced

The Associated Press reported that the operation will take place at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, with the Vatican expecting approximately one week of recovery.

Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed the arrangements but provided no further information about the nodule’s diagnosis.

Leo, elected in 2025 following Pope Francis’s death, has not previously disclosed significant health problems during his papacy.

The first American pontiff is known for maintaining an active lifestyle, including regular tennis and swimming sessions.

Upcoming Travel Uncertain

The announcement comes weeks before the pope’s planned visit to South America.

Leo is scheduled to travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, although officials have not clarified whether his medical treatment will require changes.

His recent public engagements included a visit to France in September, where large crowds attended a Mass in Paris.

For now, the Vatican has confirmed the planned surgery and anticipated recovery period. Further medical findings and their potential effect on his schedule remain unknown.
