This is a recurring theme.
Even in the highest tiers of political life, a spouse remains the harshest critic.
Most leaders hide these domestic disagreements.
Yet sometimes, a politician simply cannot resist sharing a private dispute with a crowd.
A harsh critic
Donald Trump used a recent weekend campaign stop to air some unexpected grievances about his marriage.
According to the Irish Star, the former president told a crowd in Clarksville, Tennessee, that his wife dislikes his stage presence. He explained that Melania finds his signature podium moves unrefined.
“You know, my wife hates it when I do this,” Trump said at the podium, before acting out his familiar arm pumps.
Not so presidential
“She said, ‘Do you have to do that with the fists, and this?'” he continued, recreating the gestures for the audience.
The Republican candidate claimed that Melania specifically called out his energetic routines.
“But she said ‘I don’t like it when you do the weight lifting, I don’t like it when you do the swimming,'” he finished.
Trump claimed Melania told him his behavior lacked the dignity required for his office.
The glaring detail
“‘Sir, you know,'” he added. “She says it’s not at all elegant. She said it’s not presidential.”
He did not take the feedback to heart. Instead, he justified his style by pointing to his past political success.
“I said ‘It may not be presidential, but I won the election in a landslide, OK? That’s all I know,'” he told the cheering supporters.
But people on social media quickly noticed a bizarre word choice. Online commentators fixated on the idea of a wife addressing her husband with a highly formal title, according to the Irish Star.
That formal title
This is a recurring theme. Earlier in October, Trump told a Texas crowd that Melania had corrected his pronunciation of a dietary word.
“You know, my wife told me, ‘Sir, do me a favor,'” Trump claimed. He added that she instructed him, “It’s not ‘vay-gan’, it’s ‘vee-gan’.”
Critics on the X platform leaped on the phrasing. Many users found the idea of Melania using that specific title completely unbelievable.
“Sir stories are always fake, but Melania calling him Sir is next level fake,” one user commented, as quoted by the Irish Star.
