A textbook example of how NOT to handle radio security.
When soldiers move behind the wire, one broken silence or sloppy radio transmission will easily cost everyone their lives.
According to Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, Ukrainian commandos recently turned that brutal reality directly against Moscow. In the Donetsk direction, operators from the Sword Group, a unit within the 3rd Special Operations Regiment, raided a shelter used by Russian troops as a temporary assembly post.
The hideout looked routine, but retreating soldiers left behind an unexpected prize.
Live radio left behind
During the search, the Ukrainian team seized an active two-way radio. Transmissions coming through the speaker quickly gave the game away, warning that several more Russian groups were heading toward the exact same position.
Rather than pulling back, the operators stayed put and set a trap.
The ambush worked. Approaching Russian soldiers walked directly into crossfire, leaving three dead on the ground and one taken alive.
Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces announced the raid on Facebook on October 12, posting combat footage and revealing that the captured man carried a phone packed with advance routes and commander call signs.
Pushed into slaughter
The information has not been independently verified, but during interrogation, the prisoner painted a bleak picture of life inside the Russian ranks.
He told Ukrainian interrogators about relentless infantry charges, commonly known as “meat assaults,” and claimed wounded men were abandoned without medical aid.
Refusing an order, he added, carried the threat of execution by his own side.
Used as cannon fodder
Ukrainian operators in the sector confirmed that they regularly observe similar practices.
Observers and analysts have repeatedly confirmed that Moscow is pushing minority recruits into initial assault waves before sending other units.
“Most often, we encounter Yakuts, Buryats, Tajiks, and Uzbeks here. They are sent forward as cannon fodder, and then their other units move in and secure strategic positions,” the commander explained.
Similar covert clashes are flaring across other parts of the front. Just one day earlier, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate confirmed that its Timur Special Unit tracked and eliminated two Russian military intelligence squads in the Zaporizhzhia direction, taking another captive in a calculated ambush.
