A routine trip to the doctor can occasionally turn a completely normal week upside down. It happens to ordinary people every single day. But when a standard check-up forces a world leader to clear his calendar, the sudden medical pivot draws immediate international attention.

The 71-year-old spiritual leader of the Catholic Church is currently at a medical facility in Italy. Surgeons plan to extract an unexpected mass from his chest on Tuesday afternoon.

Pope Leo shared the health update himself on Sunday. He explained to the crowd in St Peter’s Square that physicians noticed a minor abnormality during a recent physical examination.

According to The Guardian, the issue was caught early. The pope chose to act quickly before it could spread.

“The doctors believe it would be right to intervene and so, following their advice, I have decided to have the operation to remove it,” he announced.

Shock in the Vatican

The news caught top Vatican officials completely off guard. Cardinal Pietro Parolin told Rai News about his Monday evening visit with the pope.

“We spoke with great serenity,” Parolin said. “He is truly a great example. The announcement came like a bolt out of the blue, nobody expected it.”

Parolin noted that early detection usually leads to a full recovery. Despite that optimism, the Vatican has wiped the pope’s schedule clean through October 20.

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will step in to lead the weekly audience on Wednesday, The Guardian reports.

Low risk intervention

Physicians consider the impending surgery quite safe. However, testing the extracted tissue is the only way to check for cancer.

The American-born pontiff will recover in a private room on the tenth floor of the Gemelli hospital. The famous papal suite is currently undergoing renovations and remains closed.

Pope Leo is widely known for his active lifestyle. He frequently plays tennis and retreats to Castel Gandolfo to rest.

Prior to this medical intervention, he visited France in September. He was also preparing for a massive South American tour this November.

A familiar clinic

Gemelli hospital has a long history of treating Catholic leaders. The facility has even partnered with the Vatican in the past to establish high security measures.

His predecessor spent over five weeks at the exact same hospital. The Guardian points out that Pope Francis was treated there before dying of severe pneumonia in April 2025.

Now, followers around the world wait for updates on the current pontiff’s condition.
