Burnham wants to step up to ease the issues between US and Ukraine

When two old allies start arguing in public, it usually falls on a mutual friend to step in and calm things down.

In international politics, playing the peacemaker is a delicate job that requires patience, quiet talks, and plenty of tact.

Right now, one European leader is getting ready to test those exact skills.

Stepping into the middle

According to The Guardian and United24 Media, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is stepping up to ease growing tensions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Speaking on Wednesday the British leader promised to act as a mediator before welcoming Zelenskyy to Downing Street later that day.

“What I have to do in my role is try and repair bridges so that the support comes back,” Burnham told lawmakers in Parliament.

He noted that the delicate situation requires a steady hand. “Therefore I should, at this moment in time, be careful in terms of laying the ground to bring people back together. That is the role I intend to play,” the prime minister added.

Friction with Washington

That diplomatic push comes at a difficult moment for Kyiv. As reported by U24 Media, Trump has recently criticized Zelenskyy again while casting doubt on future American aid for the war effort.

Washington has also pushed Ukrainian forces to stop hitting Russian oil refineries as US officials try to work out an energy deal with Moscow.

Before heading to Downing Street, Zelenskyy met with King Charles III earlier on Wednesday. Even his flight path to Britain showed how regional politics are shifting.

United24 Media noted that the Ukrainian leader flew to London from Rzeszów in Poland, returning to a Polish transit route after strained ties with Warsaw previously pushed him to travel through Chișinău in Moldova instead.

Billions in British missiles

While trying to mend ties with the White House, Burnham is also making sure London backs up its words with hardware.

According to United24 Media, the British government is speeding up a £1.6 billion ($2.12 billion) defense deal to send more than 5,000 Lightweight Multirole Missiles, which are versatile rockets designed to hit both ground and air targets.

That massive missile program includes £45 million ($59.7 million) specifically for new surface-to-air defenses to protect Ukrainian skies. Alongside the weapons, British officials are putting together fresh financial aid, extra military gear, and new sanctions to keep the pressure on Moscow.
