Old family secrets involving Minnesota Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan’s grandfather have emerged late in the state’s Senate race.

Decades-old court documents and newspaper records involving the maternal grandfather of Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan have surfaced in the state’s U.S. Senate race.

Flanagan, a Democrat, is currently competing against Republican candidate Michelle Tafoya.

According to reporting by Minnesota-based outlet Alpha News and Fox News, institutional and legal records reveal that Flanagan’s grandfather, John Jacob Hartmann, spent decades in psychiatric facilities, escaped on multiple occasions, and was questioned in several homicide investigations without ever being formally charged.

Legal records from 1951 show that Hartmann’s wife petitioned to have him committed after claiming he was “mentally ill and dangerous.”

The filing followed an incident where a deceased man was found in Hartmann’s burning room. Although named a suspect, Hartmann was never indicted.

In 1964, while confined at the Minnesota Security Hospital, he was again implicated in the death of another patient, though no criminal charges were brought against him.

Escapes and threats

Hartmann escaped from psychiatric custody multiple times over the following fifteen years.

After fleeing to New Mexico in 1970, he was located by local authorities but released after a prosecutor deemed him “sane and safe to be at large.”

Hartmann was later returned to Minnesota after an arrest in Colorado in 1971.

In 1979, he absconded to Missouri, where federal authorities subsequently charged him for allegedly making telephone threats against a federal judge.

Hartmann passed away in 1983, when Flanagan was three years old. Public obituaries confirm he was the father of Flanagan’s late mother.

Campaign response

Neither campaign has issued an official statement regarding the uncovered records.

Reactions on social media have been divided, with some conservative commentators highlighting Hartmann’s history, while other observers questioned the relevance of a candidate’s long-deceased relative to the current race.
