Trump’s latest warning comes after a former Olympic athlete was cleared in a controversial vandalism case involving the Reflecting Pool.
Donald Trump has plenty on his political agenda as the midterm elections approach, but the president is also keeping a remarkably close eye on a familiar Washington landmark.
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become a recurring source of frustration for Trump, who has repeatedly complained about its condition and demanded action over alleged vandalism.
His administration has overseen an expensive renovation of the historic attraction, yet disagreements over what caused some of the damage have continued to generate controversy.
Now, Trump has returned to the subject with another lengthy social media statement, criticizing federal prosecutors and issuing a warning to anyone considering interfering with the landmark.
His message included a threat written in capital letters.
Trump threatens jail time over alleged vandalism
While traveling to Kansas to campaign for Republican Senator Roger Marshall, Trump shared a segment from Fox News host Jesse Watters on Truth Social.
The television clip showed two unidentified people placing their hands in the murky water of the Reflecting Pool.
Watters raised the possibility that the individuals could have been attempting to sabotage the site, although the footage did not establish that any vandalism had occurred.
Trump nevertheless used the segment to renew his allegations that the landmark had been deliberately damaged.
He also criticized an unnamed official in the US Attorney’s Office for Washington, D.C., accusing the person of failing to properly investigate the situation.
“Washington’s beautiful Reflecting Pool, which was badly damaged by Vandals despite the ridiculous writings of some Radical Left person in the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office who got it wrong and obviously didn’t investigate, witness, or see the attached tape, or the very inspiring Jesse Watters show which explained it all,” Trump wrote.
The president then turned his attention to the pool’s renovation and announced that additional security measures were in place.
“Interestingly, the Reflecting Pool has not worked properly since it was built in 1922—It always leaked! This will be different, but any Vandals that try to prove the point otherwise, will GO TO JAIL! We are watching very closely, and security cameras have been installed.”
His capitalized warning made clear that he wants future incidents at the landmark treated seriously.
However, the available footage does not establish that the two people shown were responsible for any damage.
Renovation has cost taxpayers more than $14 million
The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is among the capital’s most recognizable landmarks.
Trump has taken a particular interest in its appearance and maintenance, including improvements to its filtration system.
According to NBC News, the federal government has spent more than $14 million on the renovation project.
The president has defended the work, arguing that the pool has suffered from persistent technical problems since its construction in 1922.
His latest statement suggested that the upgraded system would finally address those longstanding issues.
But questions about the renovation have extended beyond its cost.
Disagreements over the condition of the pool’s painted surfaces have previously led to criminal allegations, public criticism and a dispute involving Trump’s own Justice Department.
Trump’s former Fox News ally becomes target of criticism
The controversy has also placed Trump at odds with Jeanine Pirro, the former Fox News personality who became US Attorney for Washington, D.C.
In August, Pirro’s office dropped charges against several people accused of damaging the Reflecting Pool.
Among them was David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist.
The decision followed findings that peeling blue paint at the site resulted from problems with the installation rather than deliberate vandalism.
According to the explanation cited in the case, the damage “was the result of a botched installation and not vandalism as initially represented by DOI.”
That conclusion directly contradicted the original allegations that people had intentionally damaged the pool.
Trump was openly unhappy with the decision.
He accused Pirro of making “a mistake” and claimed she had “folded like an umbrella.”
The criticism was particularly notable given Pirro’s longstanding reputation as a prominent Trump supporter during her years at Fox News.
Court dismisses case against former Olympian
The legal dispute continued after prosecutors withdrew their allegations.
In October, a Superior Court judge dismissed the case against Hearn, bringing that particular prosecution to an end.
The dismissal represented another setback for claims that the damage to the pool had been caused by intentional wrongdoing.
Despite those developments, Trump has continued to insist that vandalism occurred.
His latest social media post did not identify the two individuals shown in the Jesse Watters segment or provide evidence linking them to criminal activity.
Nor did it establish that prosecutors had opened a new investigation into the footage.
The president instead emphasized the installation of security cameras and warned that anyone attempting to damage the renovated pool could face imprisonment.
