Two-thirds of all Americans have same concerning opinion about Trump, that he himself won’t talk about

The president faces growing public skepticism as 66% of Americans suspect he is using his office for financial gain.

Donald Trump has spent much of his political career presenting himself as a businessman who knows how to make America prosperous.

His return to the White House in January 2025 came with ambitious promises of economic revival, including a “new golden age” for the United States.

But with the November midterm elections approaching, a growing number of Americans appear unconvinced that the president’s economic ambitions are benefiting ordinary households.

And according to a new Washington Post-ABC poll, many voters suspect someone else may be benefiting considerably more: the president himself.

The survey finds that 66% of Americans believe Trump is using his position to enrich himself financially, while his overall job approval rating has fallen to just 33%.

The findings present a difficult picture for Republicans as Trump travels across the country campaigning for candidates ahead of the elections.

Even some Republicans question Trump’s motives

The perception that Trump is using the presidency for personal financial gain extends beyond his political opponents.

According to the survey, 34% of Republican respondents share that view.

Across the wider population, the proportion of Americans expressing the same suspicion has increased by 12 percentage points since September 2025.

That shift suggests growing skepticism about the relationship between Trump’s political position and his private financial interests.

The president and his family have faced criticism over their business activities during his time in office, although the poll measures public perceptions rather than establishing whether any particular financial misconduct has occurred.

For the White House, the figures arrive at an awkward moment, with Trump seeking to persuade Americans that his administration is delivering on its economic promises.

Nearly half say their finances have deteriorated

Economic dissatisfaction is another major theme running through the survey.

Despite Trump’s repeated promises of prosperity, 48% of respondents say their personal financial situation has worsened since he returned to office.

According to The Washington Post, that is the highest proportion recorded for any president in this polling series, which dates back to 1986.

The broader economic picture is hardly more encouraging for the administration.

Three-quarters of Americans surveyed, or 75%, describe economic conditions as either “not so good” or “poor.”

Those assessments reflect how respondents feel about the economy, rather than serving as a direct measurement of economic performance.

Still, perceptions of household finances can carry considerable political weight, particularly when voters are preparing to decide which party should control Congress.

And the latest findings suggest Republicans have work to do on an issue that has traditionally featured prominently in their election campaigns.

Democrats gain an advantage on the economy

The survey also asked Americans which political party they trust more to handle economic matters.

Democrats received the support of 37% of respondents, compared with 28% who preferred Republicans.

That nine-point difference represents another challenge for Trump’s party ahead of November’s congressional elections.

Republicans are already facing pressure in competitive races, and the president’s declining approval rating could complicate efforts to persuade undecided voters.

However, national polling does not automatically translate into results in individual congressional districts or states.

Local candidates, turnout and regional political conditions will also influence the outcome.

Trump, meanwhile, has continued traveling around the country to support Republican candidates and promote his administration’s record.

Concerns extend beyond the economy

The findings suggest Americans are questioning more than the president’s financial priorities.

According to the poll, 67% of respondents believe Trump is not committed to protecting freedom of the press.

The result follows a legal confrontation over the administration’s attempts to restrict access to the White House for CNN, MS Now and Politico.

A federal judge subsequently issued a preliminary injunction preventing the administration from enforcing the restrictions while the legal dispute continues.

The administration’s relationship with news organizations has repeatedly generated controversy, with critics arguing that restrictions on press access threaten independent scrutiny of government.

The poll also identifies widespread concerns about the president’s commitment to the electoral process.

Some 61% of respondents say they do not believe Trump is committed to free and fair elections.

That represents an increase of five percentage points compared with October 2025.

Fresh legal battle over voter information

The polling arrives amid another confrontation between the Trump administration and California over election-related information.

The Justice Department recently sued the state after officials failed to provide citizenship information concerning approximately 20,000 people whom the administration claimed were not American citizens.

According to the report, federal authorities did not explain how they compiled the list of individuals.

The dispute adds to broader disagreements over election administration and the federal government’s efforts to obtain voter-related information.

It also comes as concerns about election integrity feature prominently in the national political debate.
