Trump raised eyebrows after making unusual remarks about his daughter-in-law’s physique during a campaign rally.
Donald Trump traveled to North Carolina on Tuesday with a clear political objective: help Republicans secure a crucial Senate seat in November’s midterm elections.
The president was supposed to be promoting Michael Whatley, his preferred candidate in a closely watched contest against former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.
But while praising Whatley’s political credentials, Trump found himself talking at considerable length about someone who wasn’t even attending the event.
His daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.
And rather than focusing exclusively on her political experience, the 80-year-old president appeared particularly eager to discuss her physical fitness.
Trump praises his daughter-in-law’s physique
Speaking to supporters in Greenville, Trump began by reminding the crowd of Whatley’s previous work alongside Lara Trump at the Republican National Committee.
“He was with a person named Lara Trump. Have you ever heard of her?” the president asked.
Lara, 44, is married to Trump’s son Eric and previously served as co-chair of the Republican National Committee alongside Whatley.
Their professional relationship provided an obvious connection to the Senate candidate.
However, Trump soon moved away from politics to compliment his daughter-in-law’s exercise habits and appearance.
“She’s an extremely fit young woman. Have you ever seen her exercise? I say, give me a break. She’s so fit, it’s ridiculous,” Trump said.
The president then tapped his head to emphasize that his praise was not limited to physical fitness.
“But she’s also fit up here,” he continued.
“And the two of them were unbelievable. Michael and [Lara] were unbeatable. And we won everything.”
The comments added an unexpected personal detour to a speech intended to promote Whatley’s Senate campaign.
People on social media have already given their opinions about his description:
“Unbelievable that people listen to this crappola and think he’s fit for office!” one person said.
“Make it stop…” another person wrote, with a third saying that “I think I’m gonna be sick”.
Lara Trump was once considered for the Senate seat
Lara and Whatley led the Republican National Committee together beginning in March 2024.
She stepped down from her position in December of that year.
When North Carolina’s Senate seat became available, Lara considered entering the race herself but ultimately decided against running.
Trump subsequently endorsed Whatley, the former Republican National Committee chairman.
The race has attracted considerable attention as both parties compete for control of the Senate.
According to an Elon University poll released Tuesday, Cooper received support from 52% of likely voters, compared with 39% for Whatley.
The survey therefore placed the Democratic candidate 13 percentage points ahead at the time it was conducted.
Earlier in October, Semafor reported that a major Republican Senate political action committee had suspended its advertising spending in North Carolina after previously investing more than $30 million in the contest.
Despite those developments, Trump used Tuesday’s appearance to praise Whatley’s qualifications and his history of working with Lara.
Trump says Fox News is keeping Lara away
Lara Trump now hosts My View With Lara Trump on Fox News.
According to the president, her television commitments explain why she was not accompanying him on the campaign trail.
“She wants to come out; Fox will not let her come out,” Trump told the audience.
“She wants to be here so badly with you. You have no idea.”
He added that “it is hard to campaign for someone” while working in television.
Trump also shared what he described as Lara’s assessment of Whatley’s abilities.
“She said he is one of the most competent people,” he told supporters.
The president went further, suggesting that Whatley would be his preferred choice to lead the Republican Party again.
“If I do it again, I’m going to choose Michael Whatley to head the whole Republican Party,” Trump said.
Lara’s workout videos have attracted attention before
Trump’s comments about his daughter-in-law’s fitness were not entirely without context.
Lara has featured exercise segments on her Fox News program, sometimes alongside prominent figures in the administration.
In August, she participated in an on-air workout with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, a former mixed martial arts fighter.
Mullin subsequently praised her performance, saying she “didn’t miss a rep.”
During another television exchange, Fox News presenter Brian Kilmeade pointed out that the president himself has expressed little enthusiasm for conventional exercise.
Lara responded with a joke about taking on the family’s fitness responsibilities.
“I’m working out for all the Trumps, so don’t worry about it,” she said.
The president is better known for spending time on the golf course than for participating in the kinds of workout routines featured on his daughter-in-law’s program.
Lara recently defended another White House controversy
The Fox News host has also attracted attention for her defense of the administration during unrelated controversies.
Last month, she dismissed criticism surrounding an AI-generated party video shared by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino.
The video depicted Lara, Eric Trump and Scavino celebrating with champagne during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit.
Some conservative commentators criticized the extravagant imagery, arguing that it appeared insensitive while many Americans were struggling with everyday living costs.
Lara suggested that critics should be less serious about the video.
She also remarked that conventional rules “have never really applied to this president.”
Her response added to her public profile as both a television personality and a prominent defender of her father-in-law.
