The president just trailed off, when he tried to remember.
Public speakers rely on memory to keep a big crowd engaged.
When you spend all week on the road giving long speeches, even a simple point can suddenly slip away under the bright stage lights.
At a busy rally on Wednesday, a boast about changing the map turned into an awkward pause.
Lost at the mic
Speaking in Pendleton, South Carolina, President Donald Trump stumbled while trying to brag about his push to rename Lake Ontario, according to the Irish Star.
In front of a packed arena, he failed to say the original name of the water he wanted to call “Lake America”.
Instead, the president trailed off at the podium.
“And recently I changed the name of a lake. That fronts… you know the, you know the lake… I should, but… I did it very lightly and the damn thing got changed actually. It’s actually… that’s power, right? When you sort of do it halfheartedly and it gets changed, it’s changed,” Trump said, as quoted by the Irish Star.
He kept going on the subject a moment later. “It’s called the Lake of America. True. And then I got rid of the…. And I just said, because you don’t need the ‘of.’ I said it’s just called Lake America, so it’s very, very nice. Canada’s thrilled with that. So, it was crazy, right? Crazy,” he told the crowd, according to the outlet.
A tough Senate race
The stop was part of a daily tour meant to energise Republican voters and urge them to “pretend I’m on the ballot” before the midterms, the Irish Star reported.
Specifically, Trump went to South Carolina to rescue Senator Darline Graham, a former state agency director for the blind who replaced her brother, Lindsey Graham, after his death in July.
Even though Trump backed her appointment and her special primary bid, ties between the two cooled over the weekend after he waived Russia war sanctions tied to a law named after her late brother, according to the Irish Star.
Critics have also questioned her readiness since she stumbled on a Taiwan policy question and admitted she was “not that informed on national security.”
Now Democratic candidate and paediatrician Annie Andrews is pushing for an upset in a state where Lindsey Graham beat Democrat Jaime Harrison by 10 points in 2020 during its priciest race ever, according to the Associated Press and the Irish Star.
In a fundraising email cited by the Irish Star, Andrews dismissed her rival as “Trump-endorsed and unqualified” and wrote: “Darline Graham knows that our campaign’s momentum is so strong she called Donald Trump to come campaign for her in South Carolina.”
