Democrats are reportedly preparing investigations into Musk, and his response has only fueled the controversy.

Elon Musk has never been particularly shy about confronting his critics, especially on the social media platform he owns.

But the billionaire’s latest confrontation with political opponents has attracted a rather different response from the one he may have anticipated.

With November’s midterm elections approaching, Democratic lawmakers are according to Politico considering investigations into Musk’s business interests and his previous involvement in the Trump administration.

The prospect has prompted a defiant response from the Tesla and SpaceX chief executive, who issued a warning to those considering taking action against him.

However, his message quickly attracted ridicule from users on X, with critics questioning both his language and his record in government.

Musk issues a warning after Democrats reveal their plans

According to Politico, senior Democrats are examining potential investigations into Musk and his companies if the party regains control of Congress.

Their concerns reportedly include possible conflicts of interest involving government contracts, Musk’s involvement in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and allegations concerning the use of his Starlink satellite network during the war in Ukraine.

Musk responded on Wednesday with a message that borrowed from biblical language before taking a more confrontational turn.

“Live by the sword, die by the sword,” he wrote on X.

“Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets …”

The billionaire did not identify the individuals he believed were directing the potential investigations.

His remarks nevertheless appeared to be a warning to those seeking greater scrutiny of his activities.

Social media users are not impressed

Rather than producing a universally intimidated response, Musk’s message attracted a series of mocking replies.

Among those responding was technology YouTuber Zack Nelson, better known as JerryRigEverything, who criticized Musk’s record during his involvement with DOGE.

“You had ‘higher than top secret clearance’ to root out and find the scammers and did nothing. Empty promises and empty threats. Pure theater,” Nelson wrote.

Another user, who identifies as progressive, was similarly dismissive.

“All bark no bite,” the user wrote.

“No one is scared Elon.”

Others questioned the wisdom of issuing such a warning while facing the prospect of congressional scrutiny.

“Threatening Congress so they don’t investigate you… gosh, sounds exactly like something an innocent man does,” another commenter wrote.

The replies illustrated the hostile reception Musk’s statement received from some users, although they do not establish how his wider audience viewed the exchange.

Starlink controversy fuels the criticism

Much of the criticism focused on recent reporting about Musk’s satellite communications company, Starlink.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk ordered restrictions affecting a military-grade version of the service used by Ukraine.

The allegations have raised questions about the influence a private technology company can exercise over communications infrastructure during an armed conflict.

Musk’s critics have seized on the report, accusing him of taking actions that could benefit Russia.

Political scientist Rachel Bitecofer responded directly to his warning.

“You gave aid and comfort to Putin you traitor,” she wrote.

Another user linked the controversy to Musk’s latest remarks.

“You are the one who has been living by the sword for far too long,” the commenter wrote.

“Your betrayal of Ukraine in support of Putin this week is just the latest example.”

Such accusations reflect the opinions of Musk’s critics. The reporting about Starlink does not, by itself, establish that Musk acted on behalf of Russia or intended to assist Vladimir Putin.

Democrats want answers about government contracts

Behind the social media confrontation lies a potentially significant political dispute.

According to Politico, Democratic lawmakers are considering how congressional committees could examine the relationship between Musk’s companies and the federal government.

Representative Pramila Jayapal raised concerns about the implications of a private contractor exercising influence over military communications.

“What happens when one guy gets a giant contract from the government and then uses it to do something that shuts down communication in a war that has been extremely important to the United States to support Ukraine?” she told Politico.

Her comments highlight questions about oversight and accountability when private businesses provide services considered important to American foreign policy.

Representative Maxine Dexter also expressed concerns about wealthy business figures benefiting from government spending.

She described Musk as belonging among “the well-connected billionaires, trillionaires who have seen government contracts as a way to subsidize their own company’s research, development, and bottom line.”

“We need to shut that down,” Dexter added.

The lawmakers’ comments signal an interest in examining whether existing safeguards adequately address potential conflicts of interest.

Congressional scrutiny could extend beyond Starlink

Musk’s involvement with DOGE could also attract attention if Democrats gain greater investigative authority after the elections.

The initiative was established to reduce government spending and overhaul parts of the federal bureaucracy, but its methods and results have faced substantial criticism.

Democrats are reportedly interested in examining Musk’s influence over government operations while his companies maintained significant business relationships with federal agencies.

Potential investigations could involve requests for documents, testimony from officials and scrutiny of contracts.

However, the discussions reported by Politico remain preliminary.

No finding of wrongdoing has been established by the proposed investigations, and their scope would depend on the political balance in Congress after November.
