Trump’s latest concessions to Russia are prompting fresh questions about his foreign policy.
American politics has a habit of dragging old controversies back into the spotlight, particularly when control of Congress is at stake. With the November midterm elections approaching, Democrats are considering what they might do with greater investigative powers if they gain control of Capitol Hill.
For President Donald Trump, that prospect could mean renewed scrutiny of controversies dating back to his first successful presidential campaign. His administration’s relationship with Russia has attracted particular attention, especially as Washington’s policies toward Moscow and Ukraine continue to provoke criticism.
Now, according to the New York Times, a political commentator is urging Democrats to revisit the issue through an investigation far broader than anything previously attempted.
The proposal, published by Raw Story, centers on a question that has followed Trump for a decade: Why does the president remain so interested in the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election?
A familiar controversy returns to Washington
The debate over Trump’s relationship with Russia began long before his current presidency.
American intelligence agencies concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, including through operations intended to benefit Trump’s candidacy.
However, Russian interference and allegations of criminal coordination between Trump’s campaign and Moscow are separate questions.
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation documented extensive Russian interference but did not establish that members of Trump’s campaign criminally conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.
Nevertheless, questions about the president’s conduct and his administration’s approach to Moscow have continued to generate political controversy.
Writing for Raw Story, the commentator argues that a future Democratic-controlled Congress should establish a bipartisan investigative committee focused on corruption and potential Russian influence across the federal government.
The proposed investigation would revisit past controversies while examining more recent decisions that critics believe have benefited Moscow.
Crucially, the argument is a call for an investigation, not evidence that Trump has been secretly acting on behalf of Vladimir Putin.
Trump’s interest in old Russia files raises questions
One particular detail has attracted the commentator’s attention.
According to an October 11 report by The New York Times, John Solomon, a former journalist who now serves as a special government employee at the White House, has been involved in reviewing material concerning earlier investigations into Trump.
Solomon reportedly prepared a briefing that selectively presented evidence relating to previous federal investigations, including the classified documents case.
But the article also highlighted a decision Trump made several years earlier.
In 2022, while out of office, Trump appointed Solomon as his representative to the National Archives, giving him access to records connected to the investigation into Russian contacts involving the 2016 Trump campaign.
The Raw Story commentator questions why Trump remained interested in those particular records years after the original controversy.
He suggests that the president’s continued attention to the files warrants further examination.
However, the appointment itself does not establish that Trump was concealing information or that the records contain evidence of wrongdoing.
Trump’s latest comments about Ukraine add fuel to the debate
The renewed attention comes amid another dispute over the administration’s approach to Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Trump has faced criticism for policies that opponents argue have reduced economic pressure on Moscow.
His recent remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have also drawn attention.
Speaking about the continuing conflict, Trump placed responsibility for the lack of a peace agreement on Ukraine’s president.
“Zelenskyy could have settled this war many times. Many, many times. And he chose — he chooses not to. I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal… I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said.
The comments are particularly controversial because Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelenskyy won Ukraine’s 2019 presidential election with approximately 73 percent of the vote in the second round.
His presidency has continued beyond its original five-year term because Ukraine’s martial-law restrictions prevent national elections from being held under the current circumstances.
Putin, meanwhile, has dominated Russian politics for more than two decades.
For Trump’s critics, his decision to call for a change of leadership in Kyiv rather than Moscow illustrates a troubling imbalance in his public approach to the conflict.
The White House’s position, however, cannot by itself establish any undisclosed relationship between Trump and the Russian president.
Putin’s potential appearance at Trump’s resort draws attention
Another development has added to the controversy.
The Trump administration has extended an invitation to Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit, scheduled for December 14 and 15 at Trump’s Doral resort in Miami.
The possibility of hosting the Russian president at a property owned by Trump has raised questions about both diplomatic priorities and potential conflicts of interest.
Critics have questioned whether holding an international summit at the president’s private resort could financially benefit his business interests.
The watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has pursued records concerning government preparations and spending connected to the summit.
The Raw Story commentator also argues that inviting Putin to such a prominent international gathering sends a questionable diplomatic message while Russia continues its war against Ukraine.
However, the invitation does not demonstrate that Putin controls American foreign policy, as the commentator’s broader argument implies.
Democrats are being urged to investigate beyond 2016
The article’s central proposal concerns what might happen after the midterm elections.
Should Democrats secure sufficient congressional power, the commentator wants them to establish a joint House and Senate committee to examine possible corruption and Russian influence.
He proposes involving Republicans willing to participate, arguing that bipartisan cooperation could strengthen the investigation’s credibility.
The suggested committee would look beyond the original Russia investigation to examine foreign policy decisions, government appointments and potential conflicts of interest.
The commentator calls the proposed initiative a process of “Corruption and De-Putinification.”
He also draws a provocative historical comparison with Germany’s denazification efforts following the Second World War.
That analogy reflects the author’s political assessment rather than an established equivalence between the two situations.
No evidence presented in the commentary establishes the existence of a coordinated Russian takeover of the American federal government.
A possible Democratic victory could reopen old battles
Much of the proposal depends on an outcome that has not yet occurred.
The November elections will determine whether Democrats gain control of either chamber of Congress and, consequently, whether they acquire greater power to initiate hearings, issue subpoenas and investigate the administration.
The commentator believes a major Democratic victory could leave Trump facing increased political pressure during the remainder of his presidency.
He also suggests that such pressure might influence negotiations over domestic policies, including healthcare, education and taxation.
Those possibilities remain speculative.
Congressional investigations can uncover documents, compel testimony and expose misconduct, but their findings depend on the evidence collected rather than the political expectations surrounding them.
For now, the proposal represents a renewed push by one commentator to make Trump’s Russia-related controversies a priority for any future Democratic congressional majority.
The records surrounding the 2016 election, Solomon’s subsequent involvement and the administration’s current Russia policy would all likely receive attention under the suggested approach.
Whether Democrats pursue anything resembling that investigation will depend first on the election results, and then on the priorities of the lawmakers who take office.
