Poland and the United Kingdom signed a 3-year bilateral defense plan to strengthen military cooperation and counter Russian threats.

Poland and the United Kingdom signed a 3-year defense cooperation plan in Warsaw on Tuesday. According to the Kyiv Post, defense ministers Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Wes Streeting finalized the bilateral agreement. This initiative builds upon the security partnership treaty signed by the two nations in May.

The defense plan outlines collaboration across naval, ground, cyber, and industrial domains. The areas of cooperation include artificial intelligence, deterrence measures, and counter-drone technologies. The British defense secretary emphasized the daily drone intrusions faced by Poland.

Streeting noted the daily mobilization of Polish forces in response to airspace violations. “We hear very clearly what Poland experiences every day in the form of what some describe as hybrid threats from Russia,” Streeting stated. He added that he prefers describing these actions directly as ‘state-sponsored terrorism’.

Industrial and technological development

The agreement mandates the co-development of next-generation air defense missiles. This technological collaboration will utilize existing Polish missile defense programs. Both nations will also coordinate efforts to defend civilian and military networks against cyber threats.

The defense industries of both countries will establish closer links for military procurement. This coordination includes British defense contractors and the Polish state armament group producing large-caliber ammunition. The defense plan also supports the ongoing construction of modern warships for both navies.

The shipbuilding initiatives include the Polish “Miecznik” (Swordfish) program and the British Type 31 frigate program. These maritime developments will coincide with increased naval activity and regional coordination in the Baltic Sea. The two navies plan to conduct joint exercises to protect vital lines of maritime communication.

Military exercises and international alliances

Both nations committed to continued participation in large-scale military exercises across the European continent. These training events aim to ensure readiness for electronic warfare and missile defense scenarios. The defense ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Poland and the United Kingdom will provide personnel for a “Coalition of the Willing” exercise scheduled for November. This deployment involves thousands of personnel earmarked for the Multinational Force Ukraine initiative. The upcoming exercise intends to support military training and the post-war rebuilding of the country.

During the Warsaw meeting, the officials also discussed the future of transatlantic security relations. Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed the importance of strengthening European defense capabilities without disengaging from the United States. “We are in favor of reinforcing it and building our own capabilities, of greater independence for Europe, but not independence from the United States,” the Polish minister explained.
