Technology moves at lightning speed, but bad actors often move even faster when millions of people head to the polls. The battle for election integrity is currently unfolding right on our smartphone screens. Today, the biggest name in artificial intelligence is taking major physical steps to fight back as the votes roll in.
OpenAI is running a massive war room to monitor interference during the current midterm elections. The stakes are incredibly high right now.
Politico reported that hundreds of staff members from across the company are running this dedicated operation.
Their objective is straightforward. They want to stop malicious groups from abusing their technology to spread political chaos while voting is actively underway.
Meta and other tech giants use this playbook frequently. But building a physical defense center is entirely new ground for a frontier software lab.
A clever drawing trick
The company relies on a unique safeguard to combat fake images. They call this internal process “cartoonification”.
Imagine asking the software to create a fake photo of a massive, nonexistent line at a local polling station. The system will flatly refuse to make it look real.
Instead, it produces an obvious cartoon drawing. This simple block prevents people from passing off generated pictures as actual news photography.
A recent Brennan Center report highlighted the success of this strategy. Out of six popular platforms, ChatGPT was the sole tool to meaningfully curb election falsehoods over the last six months.
Catching foreign networks
Stopping fake images is only one part of the wider mission. The tech firm also actively monitors foreign threats in real time. Earlier this month, it flagged two fake campaigns run by Russia and Iran.
Politico noted that these foreign networks used the artificial intelligence models to “launder geopolitical, conflict-related messaging into their target audiences.”
The new defense center will review any similar cases flagged for abuse as the midterms reach their peak.
Partnering for truth
The company also wants to guarantee that voters can instantly find accurate details before the polls close.
OpenAI partnered with a nonpartisan group called Democracy Works in May. This collaboration helps guide users directly to reliable polling locations and voter registration facts.
The Associated Press is stepping in to help as well. The news agency will supply live, up-to-the-minute election results straight to the platform.
Behind the scenes, the new war room will monitor all of these live features around the clock. The results are pouring in, and the pressure has never been higher.
