After telling CBS News his party wouldn’t face humiliation, a wave of Democratic wins handed Donald Trump the exact outcome he swore would never happen.
President Donald Trump may just have put his foot in his mouth hours before the first ballots were counted all over the country.
The president was sure that he and his party would survive without losing too many seats in Congress.
Instead, a blue tsunami hit Trump, the GOP, and the MAGA movement.
A confident Trump
President Donald Trump was optimistic about the midterm elections as he headlined 33 rallies across 29 days to turn out voters, telling CBS News that the tour generated crucial momentum.
“I just think that we’re doing so well that I didn’t want to see anything get in the way of what we’ve done,” Trump said in the phone interview with CBS News.
As votes were counted, he offered no firm prediction. “We’ll have to see,” Trump said, adding: “Will we win? We have a good chance. But we’re not going to be embarrassed.”
Trump did, in fact, get embarrassed
Famous last words, as they say, because the GOP and Trump did get embarrassed when both the House and Senate flipped, handing Democrats a substantial majority, even while many of the crucial races were still undecided.
Before midterm ballots were tallied, Donald Trump made it clear that an opposition Congress would not stop him. Even as CBS told Trump that Republicans were in danger of losing their majority, Trump was not worried:
“The presidency, our presidency, is considered a strong presidency. You can do a lot,” Trump declared.
