‘Political theater’: Hegseth posts erratic 5-minute video to avoid impeachment

This video was made and posted to target only one man: his boss, Donald Trump.

Facing rumors all day Thursday about his job security and threats of impeachment from both sides of the aisle, Pete Hegseth took his fight directly to the public.

The defense secretary shared a 5-minute video pushing back against demands for his removal after he started to become the scapegoat for the Republicans.

Hegseth refused to back down after the GOP had its worst midterm election since 1974.

Political theater

Hegseth framed the attacks as political revenge rather than genuine oversight. In the clip, he boasted about overhauling the military and dismantling progressive initiatives.

“Because we tore down their sacred cows, one by one, and without apology,” he said, insisting that his team had crushed diversity programs.

But even as Hegseth was in grave danger of facing a dire political fate, he defended military operations in Iran and went so far as to call on Congress to approve an enormous spending package worth no less than $350 billion.

“And the Department of War must be funded to meet the moment right now. That includes a generational investment: a reconciliation bill of at least $350 billion to keep this department, our country, way ahead in a dangerous world. We need every vote from every patriotic member of Congress.”

Trouble for Hegseth in Congress

Resistance is brewing within his own party. Outgoing Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie has promised to file an impeachment resolution against Hegseth before the current legislative term ends. Massie warned that incoming Democrats will soon launch far harsher hearings and trials. Experts in Washington believe that the impeachment articles will pass in the House.

Though he avoided using Massie’s name, Hegseth lashed out at his fellow Republican. He claimed a bitter, outgoing lawmaker had teamed up with Democrats to push fake impeachment charges against him.

“A disgruntled, defeated congressman, along with all his Democrat allies, has also dropped sham articles of impeachment against yours truly, just like they tried against President Trump twice. Didn’t work against President Trump, and it won’t work with me,” he declared, writing off the challenge as pure “political theater disguised as power.”

For now, the president is standing by him. Speaking to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl on Thursday, Trump shut down the rumors. “I have every intention to keep him,” Trump said, according to Karl’s post on social media.

Massie dismissed Trump’s reassurance toward Hegseth. Responding online, he argued that the president should find a successor immediately while Republicans still hold Senate confirmation power.
