Taiwan has raised its military alert status after detecting multiple missile launches within Chinese territory, according to a statement from the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense.
Missile Launches in Several Provinces
These events come just days after China conducted a ballistic missile test, marking a notable escalation in military activity in the region, according to Ziare.
The Taiwanese defense authorities reported that missile launches were recorded in several provinces, including Inner Mongolia (north), Gansu (north), Qinghai (west), and Xinjiang (northwest) starting at 6:50 AM local time.
The ministry emphasized that the military is continuously monitoring relevant events and that air defense forces have been placed on high alert to respond to potential threats.
First Such Test in Decades
“Any threatening or provocative actions will severely undermine regional stability,” the ministry stated. This heightened state of alert reflects ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with the latter viewing the island as a part of its territory.
Over recent years, China has ramped up military and political pressure on Taiwan, creating an environment of increased concern and vigilance on the island.
The missile launches occurred shortly after China’s announcement of its successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean.
This event marked China’s first such test in decades and was met with firm condemnation from Taiwan, which called for Beijing to exercise restraint and halt military exercises that escalate regional tensions.
